Residents give back to
Clackamas County
families during the
holidays
By CLARA HOWELL
D
arlene Fritsche remem-
bers driving down the
road two years ago when
she noticed a young man
walking to school with no coat.
“I thought, ‘Well, that’s unfortu-
nate, maybe he just forgot it today,’”
Fritsche said.
He hadn’t.
She later noticed him again without
a coat and she went out and bought a
winter jacket for the 18-year-old.
Fritsche wants to ensure children
and young adults receive gifts to
make their end of the year a bit
brighter, especially during the holiday
season. That’s why as leader of the
volunteer-run nonprofit organization
Compassion in Action Clackamas
County/Toy & Joy, she looks forward
to connecting families who are eligible
for services with members of the com-
munity, service organizations and
companies who provide holiday food
boxes and toys.
Charbonneau residents have been
donating to Compassion in Action for
the last four years.
Residents are invited to bring un-
wrapped gifts to the Country Club —
keep your eye out for a sleigh or tree
to place your items near — through
Dec. 16.
Gifts can be for children or young
adults up to age 18 — think toys,
clothes, gift cards or games.
CCC Property Manager Rick Sch-
ram delivers the gifts to the nonprofit
in Oregon City in time for the items to
be distributed prior to the holidays.
Volunteers at the nonprofit will
then sort through the items for
families.
Fritsche said the nonprofit orga-
nization and its community part-
ners help more than 3,000 families
and more than 10,000 children in
Clackamas County ever holiday
season through this toy drive.
“It enables us to provide for fami-
lies that may not have anything food-
wise or gift-wise for their families at
Christmas,” Fritsche said.
