Honoring veterans and
our heritage
Our November
luncheon was on
Veterans Day,
Nov. 11, this year.
Though there was
only one tradi-
tionally defined
veteran present
HARKER
attending, when I
asked the over 65
women attending who had been mar-
ried to a veteran, a sea of hands shot
up! They also had served in their
own way with long periods of single
parenting, frequent moves, and the
stress of separation. They shared the
camaraderie of other military fami-
lies and the closeness of our military
communities overseas during some
of these challenges. We then reaf-
firmed our heritage with the pledge
of allegiance.
Our program was provided by Lynne
McKee who wowed us with her presenta-
tion on the FBI Art Theft team two years
ago. This year she presented on the Cow-
girls and Ranch Women in the late 1800s
and early 1900s who pushed the gender
boundaries. Prior to 1929 women compet-
ed with the men in rodeos, roping cows
and riding bucking broncos. It was a fun
and informative talk about these athletic
and talented women. We also got person-
al stories about Gene Autry and Roy
Rogers for a truly “Western” program.
Our December holiday brunch is Mon-
day, Dec. 9, with a theme of “Merry Grin-
chmas.” It starts at 11 a.m. when we will
gather in the Fireside room for hors
d’oeuvres and prosecco. Luncheon fol-
lows in the dining room. The brunch is
already two-thirds full so please sign up
soon. The sign up deadline is early on
Monday, Dec. 2, but it is likely to sell out
before then.
Our entertainment will be Roger and
Nancy Wilhite, both retired schoolteach-
ers. A pair of “dueling pianists,” they are
Oregon’s answer to Ferrante and Teich-
er. These childhood sweethearts have
been professional musicians for their en-
tire adult lives. They specialize in audi-
ence involvement, including play-along
and sing-along opportunities in each con-
cert, with a wide variety of styles to
please all listeners. They have a broad
repertoire and we are sure to have a
wonderful time in December.
