16 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER August 2019 STANDING TOGETHER motorcycle in pink for that month so I support it all the way.” — Cheryl Barnum Niners share personal stories about cancer, Pink Ball By CLARA HOWELL F or thousands of years, hu- mans have battled cancer. And nearly everyone alive today has personally been affected by cancer or knows some- one who has. With the annual Pink Ball Tournament that supports OHSU’s Knight Cancer Institute, right around the corner, The Villag- er asked members of the Niners what their personal connections with cancer have been and why they support the September golf tourna- ment. Below are their answers: “My Dad graduated from the Naval Academy during WWII and served in the Navy until he retired to Florida. He was an active tennis player, runner and hiker. When he was 80, he was diag- nosed with Stage Four multiple myelo- ma, a blood cancer. Our whole family re- searched this horrible cancer, finding very little hope. I contacted OHSU to see if they had information and they invited us to a multiple myeloma support group. We listened to doctors and others with blood cancer. One man, about 45 years old, told about being near death, on dial- ysis because of kidney failure. He en- tered into a trial of a new drug, Velcade, and was now cancer free. I immediately called my family in Florida to tell them PMG PHOTO: CLARA HOWELL — Sandy McCallister Members of the Niners talk about why they support the Pink Ball Tournament. “My mother had breast cancer, my brother had stomach cancer, my dad had colon cancer and I had skin can- cer, so we’ve been touched with cancer in our family. I believe in the Pink Ball because I want cancer to be cured.” “My first bout with cancer was when I was 21 years old. I got mar- ried in March and was operated on in July so that was my first brush. Then my mother died of lung cancer, my sister is a breast cancer survivor and other than that I don’t know what the people died of in my family, but they’re all dead. I’d been working on the Pink Ball from I think the second year. ... I’m so proud of this communi- ty because they rise up whenever you need anything.” — Dianne Reiter — Cherie Sanville about Velcade, but too much damage had been done to my Dad’s body and he died weeks later. I give money with hope that research in cancer continues until a cure is found.” — Jane Teunon “I am a 25-year breast cancer survi- vor, Stage Two, and I lost both my younger brothers to cancer, lung can- cer, and I believe in supporting the Pink Ball because of the wonderful re- search OHSU is doing at the Knight Cancer Institute.” — Mary Fieweger “I’m one of those lucky people that has not had cancer in my family so it was a shock to me when I was diag- nosed two years ago with bladder cancer. I didn’t even have to have chemo but I do have to go in and be checked every four months. Pink Ball I’ve been involved with ever since I moved to Charbonneau and it’s just such a wonderful group of ladies in the Niners that sponsor this — all their hard work — and I’m glad the money is now going to research be- cause that’s very important.” “I am a breast cancer survivor for 17 years and everybody in my family has died of cancer except my mom. I also belong to a group, another group, that supports cancer (re- search) at OHSU and I have a team that we walk with in the Susan Ko- men called Pinking of You ... and my son always decorates his police “I’m a 30-year survivor of breast cancer. Didn’t have it in my family besides my maternal grandmother who had stomach cancer and died of that. Many advances have been made in cancer through research and I absolutely support Pink Ball and in- tend to continue doing that.” — Cherri Cannon “Been really fortunate. Family is all OK, but I lost my husband to can- cer five years ago — five years, four months and seven hours — horrific, horrific disease. I support Pink Ball, any opportunity I have to support re- search on this horrible, deadly dis- ease that seems to be crawling at a snail’s pace as far as making prog- ress. I do whatever I can. Every little penny helps.” — Sylvia Morrison See PLAYING FOR PINK / Page 17 We Specialize in All Things Glass 503.969.5719 • GlassDoctor.com/Molalla Serving Canby, Molalla & Surrounding Cities ɂȆȋȈȏȍȏ Formerly All About Windows Locally Owned and Operated Franchise Matt Harris Financial Advisor 8995 SW Miley Rd Suite 107 Wilsonville, OR 97070 503-694-1157 NBUUEIBSSJT!FEXBSEKPOFTDPN www.edwardjones.com Member SIPC
