THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 11 August 2019 Charbonneau Men’s Club By JOHN MCLAIN Divot good, divot hole bad The divot is a term that most golf teach- ing professionals will recommend as part of a good golf swing. So, a divot can be a MCLAIN good thing for a golf- er in the 21st centu- ry. The etymology of the word came from Scotland, meaning a “piece of turf or sod with the grass growing on it, used for roofing material, etc., 1530s, Scottish, of unknown origin.” So, a divot was a good thing for a 16th century homebuilder in Scotland. However, the divot hole is not a good thing for a golfer. Good golf eti- quette is to replace the divot back into the hole in the ground from your golf swing. Or, at least fill the hole with a mixture of sand and grass seed. But, many members have mentioned to me, “It seems we have more unfilled divot holes this year than in past years.” During the rainy days of spring and fall, the local rules may allow a golfer to lift, clean and place your ball (i.e. not back into a divot hole), which is great for when your longest drive of the day rolls into an unfilled divot hole. But during the good weather months of summer, you must play the ball where it lies, even in the bottom of the divot hole. Many a good swing and ball flight have been spoiled by the last few inches of roll into a divot hole. What can we do about divot holes? For me, I will look into installing those plastic containers on my golf cart, so I can fill divot holes when I find them on the course. Perhaps there can be a Charbonneau campaign to have a lot of members’ carts fitted with these divot hole fillers. Some members al- ready have these devices, and I say to them “Thank you.” Nine-hole activities The 9-Hole Guest Day is planned for Aug. 7. Members and their guest are invited to play in a 9-hole scramble with BBQ lunch by Busters on the pa- tio. Bring your wife, son, daughter, grandchildren, or find a foursome among your friends. August is usually a good weather month so it should be a great day to play golf. Golf will be fun. Food will be good. And the good will be good too! ■ Four-person scramble with a twist ■ Starts at 9:30 a.m. for golf, fol- lowed by lunch at 11:30 a.m.; BYOB ■ Cost is $25 for lunch and prize money payout ■ Golf fees and cart fees are extra ■ Cost $20 for lunch only (no golf) The 9-hole regular play days are on Wednesday and again on Friday.
