The art of code
breaking
Our first read for April is a
fascinating true story that has been
hidden away for 70 years. Elizebeth
Friedman's story started during
prohibition when she was asked by
the Coast Guard to help them solve
the codes being
used by bootleggers
to move their
product through the ports. "The
Woman Who Smashed Codes" by
JASON FAGONE reads like a novel
with the intrigue during WWII when
both Elizebeth and her husband,
John Friedman, were working in
separate government departments
to solve the codes used by the Nazis.
It was especially difficult because
they were both under oath to not
discuss their activities with each
other. William was well known and

received many commendations.
Elizebeth never received the credit
she deserved because of her gender
but she is considered to be the
mother of NASA. After her
husband's death she carefully
cataloged and placed in various
libraries the history of their art of
coding. I guarantee that this is a
page turner you will find hard to put
down. Please join us April 9 as we
will have a lot to discuss.
"Harry's Trees" by JON COHEN is
an uplifting story of a young U.S.
forest researcher who is trying to
forget the tragic death of his wife. He
meets a young girl, Oriana, who
devises an unusual scheme to create
an adventure to open Harry's heart
to a new life. I am looking forward to
this magical tale that doesn't exactly
end as planned. JON COHEN has
won an NEA fellowship for creative
writing and also co-writer of the film
"Minority Report" directed by
Steven Spielberg. We are a friendly
group and enjoy visitors so come
join us April 23. We meet on the
second and fourth Tuesday of each
month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the
Charbonneau Country Club.
