activities, more physical, people are out
walking and jogging and riding their
bikes at 7 in the morning," Gray says.
"So I kind of see it as the rebirth of the
Charbonneau community."

"They are looking at the initial
footprint (of the building), which is how
we figured out recently that there were
some utilities in place that have to be
moved, which would be costly and
difficult," Coston says. "They're
currently looking at the basics so we
have as much information as possible to
share with the community."
"I would imagine that at some point,
people are going to want to know,
'What is possible that we could have in
that new building, whatever it is — two
stories, one story, whatever — and
what will it cost our residents to
accomplish that," Walker adds.
First and foremost, the CCC board
hopes to hear feedback on whether the
building should be demolished or
preserved.
"There may be some interest in
(preserving it), but we're not sure that
would be financially feasible," Coston
says.
The hope is to finish the process by
the end of May, but there is no set
timetable.
"We are definitely wanting to focus
more on the quality of engagement
versus making it fast," Coston says.
All the while, the board will also be
considering how to address the needs of
future Charbonneau residents as the
community continues to grow.
"We can't just continue what we're
doing now," Walker says. "We have to
plan facilities for residents who have
never been on the Charbonneau
campus before, and also continue to
provide a high-quality and enriching
environment for existing residents."

Caught in a pickle
The Charbonneau Tennis Club has
its own story of renewal to share this
month, as it prepares to introduce
pickleball on a trial basis between May
and October 2019.
"It's the fastest growing sport (in the
country), they say," Charbonneau
Tennis Club President Kathi Gray says.
"It's been around a long time, but it's
just kind of exploded."
"And it's become especially popular
among seniors," Walker says.
And so the Tennis Club will feature
two outdoor pickleball courts between 9
a.m. and 9 p.m. from May to October.
Once that trial period ends, the club will
decide if there is enough interest to
continue with pickleball on a permanent
basis.
Pickleball is similar to tennis, only on
a much smaller court.
"We don't know exactly how many
pickleball people there are," Gray says.
"We know there are 3,000 residents in
Charbonneau, but we keep saying, 'Are

you talking about 20 people (who are
interested)? Are you talking about 100
people? Nobody can give us any numbers,
so we'll put it out there and see."
One of the concerns is noise.
"Pickleball has a noise level and it's
like a 10 times bigger ping pong paddle,"
Gray says. "When we're using an
outdoor court, it's very close to the
condos."
Pickleball will be included as part of
the Charbonneau Outdoor Court
Membership, which is $80 annually for
an individual and $120 for a family.
There is also a $100 initiation fee, which
will be waived during the trial period.
For Gray, offering pickleball at the
Tennis Club is in keeping with trends
around the community.

Charbonneau Country Club Club President
Joe Brouillette
says the
improvements planned for the terrace
will benefit the entire Charbonneau
area. Specifically, the terrace will see
the addition of a roof and walls that can
be moved up and down as needed
depending on the climate.
"Our commitment is in exchange for
space, (we're) covering it on the sides
and top," Brouillette says. "We've
entered into a very well-developed
lease arrangement with rules on usage
and so forth, and we're going to
collaborate with the country club on
dates and so forth, and have a really
great program put together on how we
can maximize use and add measurably
to the country club."
The idea is that if the Golf Club can
host more events at the space due to
these new climate control measures, it
will both enhance the club's bottom line
and enrich the community as a whole.
