Catamount Times November, 2015 Book Review: The Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl, single-handedly taking care of a family of three. She has a good life for someone who lives in the Seam. Or so she thinks. Primrose, her younger sister is chosen on Reaping Day to be a tribute in the Hunger Games. Desperate as ever to protect the young girl, Katniss volunteers to replace her sister, not only saving her from certain death but earning the respect of all of District Twelve. Portia and Cinna, Katniss’s and Peeta Mellark’s (the male tribute) stylists, make them shine for the Capitol, earning many sponsors to help keep them alive in the Games. Training goes by quickly, but when Katniss tries to show the Gamemakers just what she’s made of, they ignore her. On a rampage, she rips and ruins every training dummy she can see with her amazing archery skills. Frustrated that the Gamemakers take no mind, she shoots the apple out of the mouth of a roasted pig they are dining on. This earns her an 11 out of 12 points, and many more sponsors. Finally, after the interviews, the Hunger Games begin. Struggling to stay alive, Katniss finds an unlikely ally, a 12 year-old girl named Rue. As Movie Review: Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials I think the movie version of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is a poor representation of the book. So many great details leading up to the climax were not included. Many of the facts in the book introduced the next book but were not even in the movie. Overall, it was quite a disappointment. If you haven’t read the book, I don’t recommend this movie as an alternative. By Allison M. Catamount Staff Reporter Comic-Con: Fun for the Whole Family fate may have it, Rue is killed by a boy from District 1, but Katniss surges on, as determined as ever to win for Rue. After the tributes struggle with dehydration and arcticto-boiling temperatures, the Gamemakers announce that tributes from the same District may team up and win together. Of course, Katniss teams with Peeta and they fake a love story, which earns them more sponsors and keeps them alive until the end of the Games, where they win. The Hunger Games is a heartbreaking mix of thrilling and romantic, and it shows you that perseverance can save lives. By Delany P. Catamount Staff Reporter Comic-Cons are events where the comic book community comes together to dress up and hang out. Most cons are two days long, but some of the bigger ones, like Boston and San Diego, go for three or four days. My family and I go every year. I have been a cosplayer (costume player) for four years, and this was my fifth. I love doing it, and I have so much fun. My family makes all of our own costumes and then competes in the cosplay contest. Over the years, my family and I have made Student Poems lots of friends who inspire us, and we also inspire them. I love it when people at the cons ask, “Can I take a picture with you or of you?” I also love when kids and adults freak out when I cosplay someone like Groot. I just went to ComicCon and I won in the cosplay contest! My dad got runner-up in his Hulkbuster costume, to a really good costume of a dragon from World of Warcraft. He won a weekend pass to next year's con. Altogether we had so much fun even though none of our friends were there, and I would have to say this year was very successful. By Emma P. She is perfect in every way and perfect she will stay, She will not only be my friend to the end, She will be my friend forever more That's what friends are for. By Ella W. Renaissance festivals are great! Thousands of people, dressed in spectacular costumes, gather together and participate in different events such as jousting and archery contests. I, myself, dressed as a Knights Templar and watched a whole lot of the events. There were thousands of vendors selling numerous items, and lots of food - even whole chicken legs! Walking around, I was fascinated by all of the shops selling armor, swords, boots, clothing and food. It was amazing to look at all of the events. My favorite event was the joust. They started with basic competitions, like hitting tiny shields with their lances, then got into hand-to-hand combat Trees, Trees, Trees You see them everywhere They howl, they flow and at night you never know what that big thing out your window is. Find all types of creatures in the trees. There are big trees little trees all types you name them Maple, Redwood, Apple, Pine, and the small trees some people don’t like Broccoli! By Olivia E. 6 and foot melee. But then they started the real deal: the major jousts. They charged their horses at each other and lowered their lances, and then BAM! Straight on collision. One of the knight’s armor dented as they fell off their horse, straight on their back. It was amazing and an entirely new experience. If you're just going to look at things, you don’t really need to dress up. If you’ve never been to a renaissance festival, you should go sometime because it opens up your eyes to new wonders and experiences. By Tristan M. Catamount Staff Reporter
