4 | December 2016 Phoenix rise to the challenge BASKETBALL SCRAPE PAST GATORS, 36-35, IN 2016 FILCOM OPEN FINAL By DENNIS BENEDICTOS Story and Pictures THE Phoenix took the 2016 Filcom Basketball Open League championship at Canberra Grammar School, Red Hill, in November. Phoenix erased a four-year voodoo in scraping by the Gators, 36-35, in anail-biting final. Wild Hogs overwhelmed E-KC Tanders, 47:34, to win the Development League winter season championship. Adrian Tonkovic was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Open League final. Dino Lhaenki was named MVP of the Open League series. Aaron Lankester was named MVP of the Development League final.  Accompanying are some pictures of the season’s basketball action. ROADIES RIDE TO RAISE FOR VINNIES THE Canberra OZ Pinoy Roadies (COZPR) cycled from Penrith to Canberra on November 5-6. 2016. The road trip was part of the Roadies’ bid to raise $10,000 to support the work of St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra-Goulburn’s St Nicholas Young Carers Program St Nick’s is in its 17th year and caters to the needs of about 125 young carers in the region. The organisation is specifically focused on helping children aged 9-17 who take on a caring role for a family member with a chronic illness, disability or drug/alcohol dependency. These young people take on adult burdens and often assist with household chores, personal care, caring for younger siblings and emotional support. Bi-annual camps and monthly weekend activities run by St Nick’s volunteers offer Young Carers the opportunity to take a break from their caring role, learn new skills, make friends and have fun.  Azkalroos’ bid with RP teams FOOTBALL scholarships will enable two Azkalroos to travel to the Philippines soon for trials with national teams. Winner of the 2016 Azkalroos MoneyGram footdball scholarship was Patrick Elhindi. Centre-half Travis Elhindi will trial with the U14 and U16 national teams. MoneyGram is awarding bot scholarships. Azkalroos coach Andrew Fletcher said it was a “close and difficult selection from an excellent group of young players”.  Media golf cup GOLFER Kate Andres paired with putting partner Marilie Bomediano to win The 2016 Grace Media Golf Challenge trophy with a nett of 60 It was the fourth year of the fungolf tourney organised by Ric de Vera for the Filipino Press Group of Sydney.
