Dutton pulled up over dig at Fraser

THE Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia( FECCA) called on all political parties to resist inflammatory statements when discussing immigration.
FECCA chairman Joe Caputo expressed concerns over the recent comments by the MP for Immigration and Border Protection, Peter Dutton, who criticised former Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser’ s policy of welcoming refugees and migrants, referred to refugees“ delivering their troubles onto our shores,” and linked specific communities to broader law and order challenges.
“ While public discussion on immigration is important, any debate must take place within the bounds of respectful discourse,” Caputo said. •

Bid to extend families’ stay

FECCA has made a submission to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, in response to the discussion paper about the introduction of temporary sponsored parent visas.
The proposed new visa will allow overseas parents of Australians to stay in the country for up to five years, and the visa holder may apply to renew their visa for further periods of up to five years at a time.
The new visa for parents provides individuals with a further option when considering migration to Australia to join their children. •

A FILIPINO executive chef has put new meaning to‘ street food’ and taken it to a new level, attracting Australians across the ACT to Acton Park for a sumptuous bite, especially on weekends.
Jay Prieto, with wife Kim who is also a trained chef in her own right, creates his cuisine magic in a converted ship container, one of many with street food vendors across the park.
What makes Jay a special case is his vision about his culinary art.
“ Kim and I are dedicated to showcasing, sharing and raising awareness of Filipino cuisine by focusing on true and traditional Philippine flavours,” he says.
“ And I chose this out-of-theordinary venue to attract the wider market of people from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds.”
Jay’ s street-food place is called simply Lolo And Lola’ s, for‘ grandfather and grandmother’ s, a name which would sound familiar to almost anyone.
Jay completed a bachelor’ s degree in commerce with a major in business management and entrepreneurship before graduating with highest distinction from the Center for Culinary Arts( CCA) in Manila, with a diploma in culinary arts and technology management.
