A new gateway to Swindon: Fleming Way Bus Interchange opens
Swindon’ s town centre has a striking new arrival. The Fleming Way Bus Interchange, a transformative infrastructure project years in the making, is now complete, ushering in a new era of connectivity, accessibility, and urban regeneration. Delivered by Swindon Borough Council with support from central government and regional partners, the scheme is a cornerstone of the wider Kimmerfields masterplan. It’ s not just a transport hub— it’ s a statement of intent for the town’ s future.
A vision realised
The new interchange replaces the old bus station and reimagines Fleming Way as a linear park, prioritising pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport. With 27 energyefficient bus stops, real-time information screens, solar-powered lighting, and spacious shelters equipped with phone charging points, the facility is designed to enhance the passenger experience from the ground up.
Accessibility has been central to the project. The entire area is step-free, with thoughtful design features for wheelchair users, pushchairs, and those with visual impairments. New pedestrian crossings link the shopping district with the railway station and business areas, while cycle routes connect east and west Swindon.
A catalyst for regeneration
The interchange is a key enabler for the regeneration of Swindon’ s town centre. With £ 25 million from the Future High Street Fund, £ 3 million from the Local Growth Fund via the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership, and £ 5 million match funding from the council, the investment is already attracting private sector interest.
Nearby buildings are being repurposed into residential apartments and serviced office spaces, supporting a shift toward mixed-use urban living. The next phase will see the demolition of the old bus station and the creation of a new entertainment venue, further enhancing the public realm.
A greener, more inclusive town centre
The scheme has significantly boosted Swindon’ s green credentials. Over 186 semimature trees and 23,000 shrubs have been planted, forming part of a Sustainable Urban Drainage System( SUDS) and supported by app-controlled irrigation. Bee-friendly plants and colourful street art add vibrancy and biodiversity to the urban landscape.
New public toilets and changing places facilities— including hoists, wet rooms, and baby changing stations— ensure the interchange serves all members of the community. The area has already become a popular spot for rest and relaxation, with benches and festoon lighting creating a welcoming atmosphere.
