Wiltshire College & University Centre talks apprenticeships at TBE Big Breakfast

To mark National Apprenticeships Week 2024 , The Business Exchange hosted a talk on the subject at the TBE Big Breakfast on 8th February .
Martin Reeves and Deborah Narraway from Wiltshire College & University Centre were joined by Sam Gooding , Director / Owner of Gooding Accounts to discuss the power and benefits of apprenticeships .
Sam started as an apprentice at Wiltshire College & University Centre and still works closely with the institution to support apprenticeships within his firm – which is currently training a number of apprentices .
One of them , Joshua Thursby , also attended the event and talked about how he was able to earn and study at the same time , pointing out that gaining his qualification through an apprenticeship was quicker than doing it through a university .
Meanwhile , Martin discussed how the college supports businesses during
apprenticeship programmes and Sam explained how apprentices are retained while also highlighting how good the programmes are from a recruitment perspective .
Martin , Director of Business Development at Wiltshire College & University Centre , said , “ We always enjoy attending TBE events and were so pleased to be asked to be part of the panel discussion at the TBE Big Breakfast at Cumberwell Park to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week .
“ TBE events provide an excellent opportunity to tell the story of apprenticeships at Wiltshire College & University Centre , and we always come away with foundations for strong partnerships from all corners of business across the region .
“ It was a privilege to spend time with Sam
Gooding and Joshua Thursby from Gooding Accountants . Joshua is a fantastic example of what learners can achieve through an apprenticeship programme , especially when supported fully by their employer .
“ Joshua is now working towards Chartered Accountant status and has become a key member of Sam ’ s team at Gooding Accounts . We wish Joshua the best of luck and look forward to continuing to work with Gooding Accounts and TBE .”
Sam said , “ Here at Gooding Accounts we ’ re passionate about nurturing local accountancy talent . We find apprentices are always keen to learn and fully immerse themselves in every aspect of working life alongside their studies . “ Finding experienced individuals who fit with our unique values here at Goodings can
be a challenge , but apprentices can be trained within our environment and are key to helping us shape and grow the firm . Many of our apprentices stay with us long term .”
Josh added , “ By doing an apprenticeship I have learned by gaining experience alongside knowledge which allows for much faster progression compared to just acquiring knowledge on its own .”
Wiltshire College & University Centre offers a wide range of apprenticeships throughout Wiltshire and its neighbouring counties in more than 30 occupations .
Gooding Accounts is currently recruiting for a new apprentice at its Warminster office .
