RECRUITMENT AND THE BOTTOM LINE

Every employer will have an ideal candidate in mind for their specific role . They ’ ll be looking for the correct blend of academic qualifications , technical expertise , personal qualities , and of course the elusive “ x ” factor that all employers seek out in a new staff member .
Recruitment is tough right now with many sectors struggling to find qualified staff , so I am often surprised that when I ask clients who are struggling with resources whether they have apprentices , the answer is usually no .
Some feel that apprenticeships are more trouble than they are worth with the belief that businesses will put time and effort into training schemes only for the apprentice to leave as soon as they are qualified , taking their newfound skills with them .
As an expanding business ourselves - our revenue rose by 12 % last year - we have had our share of problems finding ideal candidates .

We are currently advertising vacancies for three more qualified accountants and two trainees to join our current 40-strong team .
For accountants , recruiting trainees is very much the norm , and it ensures a steady stream of new talent coming into the industry . We have a robust in-house training scheme , ensuring recruits get good experience in lots of areas , and
use the apprenticeship scheme to support them to achieve AAT , ACCA or ACA qualifications .
The benefits are quantifiable . Training your own staff means you have control over what they are learning and ensure it is of the highest possible standard and protects your future staff resource needs .
Some businesses do find retaining staff after they ’ ve completed their training a challenge , but our retention levels are great . We have many qualified staff who started with us as trainees . This shows if you provide good training and the right culture , apprentices will remain loyal even after they ’ ve completed their qualifications .
At Richardson Swift our training opportunities don ’ t just apply to those starting out in the accounts industry . Last year we introduced a Career Pathway programme , designed to give all staff access to the extended training they need to meet their career aspirations , whether that is more qualifications or moving to a different role within the company .

The experience of running our own training programme has informed our ability to guide clients when setting up their own schemes . If a company is expanding the last thing it needs is for its growth to be held back by an underresourced workforce .
A lot of businesses , though , are ad-hoc with recruitment , which can cause a lag between need and resource , even when the market is candidate rich .
As well as preparing top-level business objectives , companies need to be looking at their future workforce requirements and anticipating where gaps may arise , so they can start planning their recruitment schedule in advance .
Identifying where gaps will occur means we can calculate recruitment costs into their business plan for the following year and make sure they have the right resources available , as and when they are needed .
Helping them set aside resources for recruitment and training has become a standard part of the broader advisory relationship with have with many owner-managed businesses .
