Royal Wootton Bassett
Royal Wootton Bassett is a small market town
mentioned in the Domesday Book and until the
1800s was very modest with a population of less
than 2,000 and an economy based around farming
and agriculture. It started its long association with
the military when RAF Lyneham opened nearby in
1940 and its expansion continued from the 1960s
with the coming of the M4.
Today it’s well known for its community spirit when residents lined
the High Street to pay their respects as the repatriation of service
men and women passed through after losing their lives in conflict in
Afghanistan and Iraq. As a result the Queen bestowed the ‘Royal’ title
to the town in 2011.
