Nicola McHale is Vistage chair for the South West, a private advisory group for business leaders. Nicola gives her thoughts on building a personal brand.
Successful businesses always pause and reflect either now or at the end of the previous year – did you?
What was your most significant accomplishment in 2016 – How will you replicate it? What was your biggest mistake? What will you do to avoid a repeat performance? What was your best business decision? What was your worst? What did you learn from each experience? Do this yourself and with your top team and with every member of staff – it helps clear the decks. That way people learn from their mistakes and you ensure they are performing to the best they can and you can hold them accountable this next year.
Now what about 2017 – successful leaders always take the time with their teams to plan for success. They will take a day early in January to get ready for the year.
What do you want / have to achieve? By Christmas 2017, what will you have achieved? What does success look like? What is your number one strategic priority? Think about how you will communicate, measure and execute against it.
What specific, measurable, regular activities over time will you engage in to enhance your development as a leader? How will you hold yourself accountable? What could stop you as a leader? How could you stop your own success? What behaviours do you need to change? In my Vistage Groups we challenge one another to be our very best and achieve the most we can with integrity. Every month we stop, reflect, challenge and learn. We discuss our members biggest issues, brainstorm, question, challenge and support until they can find a resolution. Imagine 10 – 16 brains working on your issue, coming up with solutions for you. It is amazing what we can achieve together.
