Business continuity under scrutiny with CIS
Richard Marsh, CEO of Faringdon based company CIS answers
some of the most frequently asked questions around business
continuity and what it really means for your business.
Not knowing the importance of
business continuity is why many
businesses are at risk of data loss.
Business continuity simply put, is
ensuring your business continues after
an IT meltdown, whether that be from
hardware or software malfunction,
ransomware attacks or human error.
Data loss is one of the most common
reasons why companies go out of
business.
Is using Dropbox,
OneDrive or Google
Drive the same as
business continuity
planning?
your personal files and documents.
Business continuity is essentially
restoring your whole IT estate from an
IT disaster, not just your files.
What is a 'Recovery
Time Objective' and
why is it important?
A Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
means how quickly, in the event of a
complete IT failure, can you be back
up and running. Imagine if the server
that runs all your core applications
went down - how long would it be
before your business starts to be
impacted? Once you have identified
this you can then start to work with an
IT specialist on a solution that fits your
requirements.
Storing data off-site
doesn't sit well with
some businesses,
how do they know
it's secure?
This is always an interesting question
to answer. It’s likely that your data
is more secure stored off-site at a
reputable data centre than it is at your
offices. Why? Because it’s unlikely your
offices will have the same sophisticated
security and redundancy as a reputable
data centre. Think of it this way, do you
keep your money in a box under the
bed or do you put in a bank which is
purpose-built for security?
