SPOTLIGHT ON TROWBRIDGE
RETAIL BOOST FOR
WILTSHIRE’S COUNTY TOWN
Trowbridge has a growing population of around
40,000 and serves a wide area in western Wiltshire
and eastern Somerset, with excellent public transport
links including direct rail services to Bath, Bristol, London,
the South Coast and Wales.
The County Town has many shops including; Next, New
Look and Monsoon, local independents, a six-day-a-week
indoor market and weekly Wednesday outdoor market.
Supermarkets are conveniently located close to the town
centre, with free parking.
The town’s history is connected to weaving which has left
a rich legacy of wonderful buildings. Situated in one of the
renovated mills in The Shires shopping centre, Trowbridge
Museum tells the story of West of England woollen cloth
production. Highlights include a Spinning Jenny and
working looms. In 2015 Trowbridge will be celebrating the
800th anniversary of Magna Carta, as Trowbridge is one of
the 22 Baron Towns.
Recently the town welcomed a new 7 screen Odeon
cinema, Nando’s, Prezzo, Frankie & Benny’s restaurants and
a Premier Inn hotel, all located at St Stephen’s Place, next to
the Civic Centre and town park. Trowbridge Civic Centre is
Wiltshire‘s flagship venue, providing conference facilities for
business needs; sporting events and entertainment including
live music, concerts, drama performances and top
comedy evenings.
The Civic Centre will host the South West In Bloom
Awards ceremony in September this year. In addition to the
floral displays which have achieved Gold in the regional
awards, Trowbridge Town Council continues to enhance
the environment, with initiatives such as updating street
furniture and town signage and support for a range of
events in the park including an annual free Play Festival in
early June and Armed Forces Weekend at the end of June.
For the future there are plans to expand the Museum
as part of a Cultural Quarter, provide new sports pitches at
Paxcroft alongside the town’s new Rugby Club and establish
a Business Improvement District.
Wiltshire Council have opened a new Library in
County Hall and are planning a major active leisure
campus development.
