The XVIII century was also characterized by the presence of the 'Ferriera'.

What is the 'Ferriera?

Today it is a monument but in the past it was used as a factory for the production of weapons and was, later on, transformed into a mill that used the waters of the stream Riello.

Can you describe the Mills of the XVIII century?

The mills 'Ferriera' and 'Falco' are made up of tuff and wood. They have a very simple structure. The canals connecting the mills, constitute a symbolic value since they are the evidence of the traditional building techniques.

Are there any problems with this territory today?

Yes, there are. Pollution of rivers first of all and also the presence of a lot of concrete structures ruining the landscape.

And what about solutions?

Washtubs, fountains, Mills and the 'Ferriera' are being restored and recovered by the government. Moreover the aim is to create a sustainable economy to promote landscape and tourism.

Thank you for this interview. I hope to come and visit your town as soon as possible.

IIS “DE’ LIGUORI”

Monday 6th August 1787

The dearly beloved former bishop of Sant’Agata de’ Goti passed away last Wednesday, 1st August, after a long period of retirement in the Redemptorist community of Pagani.

Alfonso Maria De’ Liguori was born in Naples on the 27th September 1696. He can be considered a child prodigy! At the age of twelve he enrolled at the University of Naples, where he achieved his doctorate in civil and canon law four years later; then he began to practice as a lawyer at only sixteen. Following a crushing defeat achieved in his professional career he decided to devote himself to God. He was ordained a priest and soon he showed to be special! Following the earthquake that struck the city of Foggia, he travelled to Capitania where, while he was preaching in the Church of St. Giovanni Battista, he was seen wrapped in a beam of light and he was seen to levitate from the ground. Later, he retired in Liberi (near Caserta), where he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. In 1762, the Pope Clemente XIII wanted him as a bishop in the diocese of Sant’Agata De’ Goti.

He had the gift of ubiquity: it is said that, after being appointed as a bishop

he went to Rome to assist the Pope Clemente XIV but his confreres in Sant’Agata would see him, for two consecutive days resting on a chair while in ome/ It was Probably a miracle he had to stay in this position

(but at the same time he would comfort the Pope who was in agony.

He left his position as a bishop for health problems.

Alfonso was also an important Italian composer. He composed two famous religious songs: ‘Quanno nascette ninno’ and “Tu scendi dalle stele”.

“Quanno nascette ninno”

tells the birth of Jesus and how this event changed the world. It is written in Neapolitan dialect and witnesses the great faith of the Neapolitan people.

The song ‘Tu scendi dalle stelle’ (https://youtu.be/68mCdwb4A3k ) was written during a mission in Nola and has become very popular and will probably be long famous.
