A new country: the EU
2nd November 1993
Yesterday was a very important day
that changed the history of Italy and
of Europe: the treaty of Maastricht
became law. We all have been
waiting for that date for one long
year and now the day has come. In the treaty, they decided to create
some parameters for the nations who
wanted to become members of the
European Union: the adoption of
severe measures for their economic
and financial politics.
The treaty includes many reforms, all
aiming at one common objective:
strengthening
democratic
institutions in the EU and giving the
power of handling the laws to the
European Parliament. It gives the right of citizenship to
every member of the Union and
introduces the parity of sexes, which
are important goals for all of us.
Thanks to the treaty, every member of
the European Union can adopt the
euro as the main currency, which
will facilitate commerce. This is the
result of the creation of the European
Central Bank.
