Reading for Comprehension Easy 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Strengths Weaknesses Teacher explains format of lesson: students read alone, but work together to define words one at a time for each paragraph. Teacher projects text onto screen in front so all students can read silently. As students read, they write down unknown vocabulary in their individual notebooks. Once everyone has finished reading, teacher calls on a student to read the first paragraph aloud. Teacher calls on students individually to go to the front of the class and write a word that they don´t know from that paragraph. Teacher asks if any other students can explain the word in English. Students describe word in English until the student at the front understands and can write the translated word in Spanish. Then everyone copies the translation into their notebooks. Students discuss any differences in meaning based on context to ensure they understand the word in the text they are working on. Repeat with each paragraph. Once all words have been discussed, teacher selects a student to explain the meaning of the text (or a summary of the text). Students understand the text better than if they read it alone. They practice speaking and its more active. Students are sometimes impatient and translate before understanding in English. 8
