That night, Lidia couldn’t stop thinking about the box. By morning, she had made up her mind. She was going to open the box. She brought it to school, as she walked into the cafeteria, she saw students eating breakfast, looking at their phones and catching up. She hurriedly gathered a few of her friends to show them the box.

“Look,” she said, holding the box up. “Everyone says it’s dangerous. But maybe it’s just old.”

Her friends looked unsure.

“What if its special?” she said quietly.

“Look nothing will happen”

She clicked the latch….

The box opened.

At first, nothing happened. Then suddenly the air felt strange. A whisper moved through the courtyard, not a voice, but a feeling. Another voice followed, then another, and another, and another. Everyone stopped talking; heads turned, bodies froze, lights dimmed, and eyes widened.

The sky got dark, clouds rolled over, and thunder echoed in the air.

The whispers became clear. They got inside everyone’s heads.

A girl on a bench jumped, as if someone had called her name.

A boy looked at his phone and frowned, upset for no reason.

Two friends started arguing suddenly, out of nowhere.

Within minutes, worry and anger spread through the courtyard. Teachers came out, confused by the chaos

The box had released things that couldn’t been seen by the eye. There was, misery, disease, fear, anger, doubt and jealousy floating into every corner embedding themselves in everyone’s soul.
