5 IDEAS TO KEEP
YOU & yOUR PET
HEALTHY & SAFE
According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2018 is the year of the Dog and its characteristic word is ACTION! ... The Dog occupies the eleventh position in the Chinese zodiac. You are a “Dog Chinese zodiac animal” if you are born in one of these years: 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018. I am actually a Monkey-according to the Chinese Zodiac…kind of fun to see what animal you are. What are you? Go here to find out:
Looking back on 2017 and welcoming in 2018, I am optimistic and excited. I learned from mistakes made in 2017 (playing fetch at the beach with Josie and the dangers of sand), and excited in 2018 to share more of my experiences, tips, ideas, and great pet products through my monthly article with all of you.
Every year we begin wanting & resolving to do (or quit doing) something and expect to be the game changer in our lives. For example, with over 50 percent of pets in the U.S. classified as overweight (like many of us per doctor’s charts) there’s no better time for owners to commit to a new diet, and exercise plan for their pets as that seems to be the top resolution for people too! Here are 5 ideas to consider this year that can help you and your fur kid in the family stay healthy and safe.
#1 Measure Your Pet’s Food - Every Time & Choose an Age Appropriate Diet!
Many of us pet owners “eyeball” their pet’s daily intake, and pour that into a bowl, usually resulting in overfeeding and weight gain. Make sure to use a measuring cup so your pet isn’t taking in more calories than they need. The recommended feeding guidelines on the bag are good place to start, even if like me you don’t think it’s enough. Puppies & older pets have very specific nutrient requirements to ensure their bodies grow healthy and strong. Do pay attention, or talk to your vet or pet store where you by food to make sure you are feeding your dog food tailored to your pet’s life stage and age to keep them in good health.
#2 Teach an Old Dog a New Trick
Studies show that mental stimulation can help reduce cognitive deterioration in aging animals. In other words, keeping your older pet’s brain active can actually make it healthier! Teaching your pet new tricks and practicing those they already know are a great way to keep those neurons firing. Puzzle feeders, which force a pet to think through a task in order to be rewarded with a treat, are also an excellent way to keep a pet’s mind engaged.
