I hope everyone had a great time at the St . Martins Church Festival . The festival is always a great time to fill up on delicious food and catch up with our families and neighbors .
My friend and neighbor Emma Kroner thought that her son Mike was dropping
Emma Kroner off a covered dish for a family reunion that I was having at the St . Martin ’ s Hall on Saturday July 22 . What she didn ’ t know was that all of her family and friends had gathered to celebrate her seventyfifth birthday . Needless to say , she was very surprised and
Every First Sunday May - October enjoyed the evening with nearly one hundred people sharing in the celebration . Emma is such a sweet person , and it was great to show her how much she is loved by so many family and friends .
I mentioned last month about the Karl E . Kelly Camp that several of our local young people attended . My boys , Justin and Caleb , were fortunate enough to go along with Jake Sedgebeer , Grant Walters and Ethan Clouse . We arrived at the Ross Camp in West Lafayette and headed for the tent city . We saw Hank and Maria Sedgebeer , Chuck and Laura Walters , and Bill and Elisha Clouse and their sons . It ’ s funny to drive three hours away and find your neighbors in the same tent .
The young people had an amazing , educational week filled with so many activities . Each attended a very thorough hunter education class along with boating certification . On range day they loaded and

fired nearly 30 different guns , bows , and crossbows , and even got to throw tomahawks . I believe they said 38,000 rounds were fired by the ninety-six kids attending .
Other events included a night of primitive camp where they cooked over a fire . They also had someone come in to show an eagle and several other animals .
So many kids in our area and their dads or grandpas enjoy hunting , and this was an amazing week to learn to conserve our wildlife , safely handle fire arms , safely operate ATV ’ s , and even be safe in a tree stand .
They also got to spend a day at the Raccoon Lake Recreation area learning about canoe safety , taking air boat rides , and enjoying a fun day at the lake .
We are very grateful to the Conservation officers who give their time each year to honor their fallen comrade Karl E . Kelly , who lost his life trying to save others during a training exercise . His family ’ s wish was to educate youth on safety and conservation , and this camp does just that .
Thank you again to the New Alsace Conservation Club for providing scholarships to so many youths in our area . Receiving the scholarships provided an amazing experience that they will remember for a lifetime , and the opportunity to learn many things . They learned to stay safe and conserve the natural resources .

Msgr . Harold Knueven was born in New Alsace , the son of John and Leona Knueven . He was ordained a Priest on May 3 , 1958 . For the St . Paul Catholic Church History 1833 - 2008 , Msgr . Knueven wrote about his stay in Rome . " During Holy Week , I assisted the Holy Father , Pope John Paul II , at the various services with about 300 other priests to give out Holy Communion ,” he wrote . " School days , school days , dear old golden rule days ..." School has begun - for some in August ! When I went to school and later when I was teaching , we started the day after Labor Day . Parents and children had the whole month of August to vacation and visit relatives . When I started first grade ( no kindergarten back then ), twelve students were in my class . But four grades were in the classroom itself . At St Paul ' s , Grades 1 - 4 were in one room and grades 5 - 8 were in another . We didn ' t know we were crowded !
When I graduated from the eighth grade , I went to Guilford High School . Some of the girls went to Oldenburg Academy , and other classmates went to Sunman High School , depending upon the district in which they lived . About thirty students were in my class there . Mr . Lewis Willis was the Principal . Guilford High School encompassed three floors with the gym and basketball court in the basement . The building was remodeled and is now the Guilford Fire Dept . The old covered bridge was still in use then . Oh , the stories I could tell ....
Thanks for keeping in touch . Space gone , so long .

The Fourth of July is now over which makes us half way through the summer . The Town of Greendale put on several events through the day on the Fourth . A 5K race was the first event of the day . First male walker from Greendale to finish was John Davis , 50 , with a time of 41:09 . He placed fourth overall and first in his class . Lizzie Redar , a twelve-year-old female from Greendale finished seventh overall and first in her class with a time of 42:55 . First place eleven-year-old Sylas Craig from Greendale finished first in his class and twentyfifth overall . The second event of the day was the kid ’ s fishing derby at Schnabelt pond . Participants lined up around the banks of the pond in anticipation of winning a prize . Sam Meeks caught the largest fish which was twenty-nine inches long in the boy ' s category . In the girl ' s category , a tie between Anna Whitaker and Abi Wells occurred when they both caught fish measuring twenty-nine and a half inches long . Looks like the girls out did the boys this time . Greendale provided lunch for all . In an afternoon event , the bike parade riders were all decked out in red , white and blue . First place went to Ryan and Tyler Goodwin , second place went to Brody Summers , and Ashlin Walston won third place . The pool was open with free admission and enjoyed by all . The day ended with loud and colorful fireworks at dusk . What a good Fourth of July !
I did get to do a short interview with my grandson on his Boy Scout camping trip to New Mexico . The only information I could get out of
