The scouts had snowball fights in the mountains , and at the end of their two-week hiking , they were all glad to take showers and eat . The scouts only had one bear encounter in which the bear passed between their tents and kept on going .

I am still on a mission to find out who has been feeding the squirrels in the Greendale cemetery . I think his name is Bob . I need some help with my mission . Please E-mail me if anyone knows Bob ’ s last name .

I love to pick blackberries . You may wonder why I love to do something that is both painful and hot ? I can only say that I come from a long line of women who have always “ put up ” food for the winter . I love that blackberry pie on Thanksgiving Day and pulling the green beans out of the freezer to throw in homemade vegetable soup ! As I was struggling in the 90-degreeplus heat , battling bugs and sticker bushes , I wondered how many people still put up food . I posed the question to friends and found that not only do they still “ put up food ,” but it is a family affair . Laura Schuette of Lawrenceburg recently froze twelve dozen ears of corn with her parents Mr . & Mrs . Paul Filter and daughters Macie and Meghan . They have plans to do more soon . Betsy Folop of Greendale made nineteen quarts of applesauce and plans to nab some tomatoes to make salsa . Jennifer Bisch of Bright makes a homemade marinara sauce . Dr . Aleah Gibson and her mother Peggy Hancock got their hands on some peaches and made peach preserves , peach salsa , and peach BBQ sauce . Kristen Walker of Milan will be canning green beans for the first time this year but is an old hand at making sweet and spicy mustard and freezing zucchini for bread . Andrea Ewan and husband Mike freeze corn and spaghetti sauce together . Barbara Lies dries a lot of fresh

herbs and tomatoes . She uses them in scrambled eggs , pasta dishes , and salads . However , the grand champion award for canning goes to the Sherri & Chuck Heck family of Aurora . Together with sons Ryan and Kyle Graff , parents Charlie and Donna Thies , brother Robbie Thies and sister-in-law Rachel , and grandchildren Lily and Lincoln made thirty-two batches of blackberry jam and ten gallons of sauerkraut in one day . They also recently had a marathon session of canning twenty-four quarts of green beans . Uncle Jerry comes in from South Carolina , and four generations participate in the whole process . At family dinners , they play the game to call out the vegetable that came from the garden or meat from the farm . Fun ! I hate to tell them that I have been known to have a lone zucchini lay on my counter for weeks .

Hamline United Methodist Church , with the help of other organizations and churches , provides a free dinner to the Lawrenceburg community every Wednesday night from 5:15 to 6:15 pm . On July 5 my church took a turn serving a dinner . With the help of Judy Folop , Mary Catherine Dawson , Lisa Dawson , and Larry and Donna Steuer , we served a very nice meal to the community . Mary Weber of Sunman does a great job coordinating these meals for Hamline . I recently ran into her again at the Huntersville church picnic in Batesville . I listened to her play in the Batesville Eureka Band . I am told that the band ’ s eightyyear-old drummer , Carolyn Wintz , had no drumming experience but agreed to help out the band when they needed a

There is no doubt everyone had little trouble finding something to do for the Fourth of July celebration this year . I watched both the Aurora and Greendale fireworks . The lighted boat parade for Aurora ’ s Red , White and Boom festival was beautiful . If they have the parade next year , take the time to enjoy it . I especially enjoyed the company that night of Suzanne Ullrich and Jen Awad . We made new friends with a couple who drove over from Hebron Kentucky to watch the parade .

Rivertown Players presented the play “ Little Shop of Horrors ” on July 20- 22 . I had the pleasure of attending this play with my friend Shirley Casebolt . We both marveled at how a play about a man- eating plant gained such popularity ! The first time I saw it years ago , the production was put on by Lawrenceburg High School and my cousin Holly Fehr had the leading role . The props were really nice and the man-eating plant

We all said goodbye to a former Lawrenceburg resident and former Seagrams executive Ralph Sprecher this month . He will be missed because he was truly a very kind , knowledgeable , and caring man . While he passed away in his new home state of Florida , his wife Reta Sprecher brought him back to Lawrenceburg ’ s Ludlow Hill as his final resting place . My friend Imogene McLaughlin was injured years ago on the job at Seagrams . She too was saddened by his passing . She recalled fondly how caring he was to her the day she was injured and insisted on proper care for her . Ralph will be missed by all who knew him .

By the time you read this article , the kids will be back in school , and the pools will be closed during the week . Next will come soccer and football season . Where has the summer gone ?

Kendra McAndrew Earns Girl Scout Gold Award

Kendra McAndrew earned the Gold Award for her design and orchestration of the announcer stand fir the 4H arena

Kendra McAndrew earned the Girl Scouts Gold Award for the newly constructed Announcer Stand she orchestrated . The Gold Award is equivalent to the Boy Scout ' s Eagle Award . The stand is located at the 4-H Horse Arena at the Dearborn County Fairgrounds .

Kendra began her journey by discussing the need for an announcer stand with the leader of the 4-H Eldorado Horse & Pony club . She then went to the Dearborn County 4-H Board of Directors for permission to proceed with the project . With their blessing , Kendra approached

Lawrenceburg Mayor , Kelly Moullaun , and the Lawrenceburg Conservancy to obtain permission and acquire necessary building permits .

Kendra organized the drafting of blueprint plans and developed a budget . She negotiated with local business and construction agents to proceed
