It always seems that the summer goes way too fast . Next week the grandchildren will be returning to school . It ’ s been an exciting two months with plenty of ball games and so many practices . I really enjoy watching the games- baseball and fast-pitch softball have dominated my time . I love to watch the kids play and gain that confidence that keeps them going . Now soccer season is getting ready to begin . Basketball , baseball , and softball will continue as well . With school starting , please take the time to be aware of what ’ s going on around you because the mornings will now be filled with a lot of activity .
After school , we need to keep an eye on these kids because

sometimes they can get frisky and not pay attention to what ’ s going on around them . Take some extra time to be careful . I ’ ve noticed that getting older has taken its toll by making me slow down while driving and to not be in such a hurry .
The grandchildren are having fun finding rocks that have been hidden around . The rocks have been painted and left for others to find . Some even offer prizes . My granddaughters , Carli and Alexandra , went with Grandma on several trips with the golf cart . Now our dining room table is full of bottles of paint and rocks that are ready to go thru the assembly line . I even painted one red , white and blue . The girls told me it wasn ’ t too bad but I could do better .

I enjoyed another trip to Washington , DC June 23- 25 with fifty veterans from Southeastern Indiana . As usual , the trip was outstanding . Unfortunately we lost one of them shortly after we returned home . Pat Martini , Vietnam War Veteran , passed away . He was a good buddy of Bill Hautman ; they grew up together . He said he always wanted to go to the WALL and see the other memorials , so he finally got to do that .
I ’ m looking forward to another trip to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in September to see all the great planes and displays . We always charter a bus and take fifty-five veterans for a day trip , after which we treat them to supper . I ’ m always looking for Purple Heart Recipients to honor , so contact me if you know of someone in our area who hasn ’ t been honored with one of our beautiful plaques .
I talked for over an hour today with a good friend from Greendale , who was Special
Forces and badly wounded in Vietnam , Jim Ketrow . If you know Jim , you know he ’ s one tough hombre and lucky to be alive after Vietnam . He ’ s coming in to visit me and he ’ ll be receiving a plaque at Fall Fest this year in Lawrenceburg . I thank God every day for men like him who are such American Patriots and True American Heroes who put their life on the line for our freedoms . Jim is very humble about his experiences but believe me , he was wounded more than once and had to tend to his own wounds some of the time . It ’ s always great to visit with him and talk about our younger days growing up and some of the characters we grew up with . I was telling him that fifty years ago ( really ?) I was home on leave before going to Vietnam in late August of 1967 . I thank God daily that I was able to come home and Live the American Dream . Take care and stay healthy--- -that ’ s the secret to the whole game of life .

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Fourth of July and was able to watch some fireworks with family and friends . Lots of ball games were played that weekend . Congrats to our local boys , Trojans All Star team coached by Rick Noel , for winning two championships ! Way to go .
September 9 is a day to put on your calendar . This will be a big day in Sunman , starting in the morning with the Salute a Soldier 5k and the Sunman Fall Festival in the afternoon . Seeing everyone come together to celebrate our veterans and community is always great . This makes me think of the past Sunman Idol contests and Lisa Disley singing Janis Joplin . She is such a great singer ! Maybe we will get to hear her again this year .
As I was driving through Sunman the other day , I passed McPherson ’ s employees staying healthy by walking in the parking lot . I also passed a few people who looked like they were on their way to the

park , and I saw several guys at Sunman Auto Care hard at work . The members of the Riesenbeck family who are new to the area were walking and riding bikes on the new sidewalk . I was even lucky enough to meet the Dieselberg family ’ s cute new puppy , Meeko . As I was driving back home to my house I couldn ’ t help thinking about all of the wonderful people who live here in Sunman . I hope all of you take that moment to really look around and be thankful too .
School will have started and with a new Sunman Elementary principal , Mrs . Pamela Chambers . Thank you , Mrs . Morton , for all the years you put into our area ! We wish you the best in your new position .
Congratulations to Keegan Moster and Michaela Hartman , our Ripley County 4-H Fair King and Queen . They are both members of the Faithful Workers Club in Sunman . They represent us well !
Shout out to Alan Kammeyer in Texas ! Thanks for trying at the last Sunman history question . He told me that he was a member of the Class of 1968 at Sunman High School . It was great to hear that our readers pay attention .

Last month ’ s history question was , “ What business in Sunman used to be a hotel , sandwich & ice cream parlor , and antique shop ?” The answer is Classic Pizza . A lot of history occurred in this building including the official signing of Sunman becoming a town in 1898 when it was known as the Price House Hotel . The question I have for you this month is , “ When did Sunmanville become Sunman ?” I will have the answer with a few extra facts in the next edition . Send me an email with your answer and any stories you may have about Sunman ’ s history .
Please let me know about family milestones , vacation , or a little bit about Sunman and yourself . Share the good news with me at sunman @ goBEACONnews . com !
