September 2017 Melissa, Chad, Callie, Cooper, and Carter Barrett visited the Paul Brown Stadium. ST. LEON By Debbie A. Zimmer Community Correspondent [email protected] The St. Leon Volunteer Fire Department wants to give a big THANK YOU to every- one who helped with our recent Firemen’s Festival. We would not be able to have a successful event without the help of our community mem- bers who give so willingly of their time to help us out. Congratulations to Nicki and Tony Kamos on the June 30 birth of their daugh- ter Madeline. Welcoming her home are big brothers and sister – Joshua, Renee, Myles, and Tristan. Grand- parents are Vicki and Doug Kamos, Marily n and Dave White, Larry Fette, Great Grandparents Pat and Rich- ard Schuman and Verena Fette. Congratulations to Gina and Jon Hoffman on the July 13 birth of their son Paxton Jon. Welcoming Paxton home was big sister Ella. Grandpar- ents are Carolyn and Jerry Bulach and Mary and John Hoffman. Congratulations also go to Donna and Jared Hiltz on the July 17 birth of their daughter Reagan Frances. Welcoming her arrival are grandparents Donna and Ryan Davidson and Jane and Gary Hiltz, Aunt Josalyn, and uncles Xavier and Eljah Davidson, and Great Grand- ma Frances Bischoff. Gerhard Deddens was among a group of veterans who recently placed a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, DC. I have been present in the past when this has been done, as well as the changing of the guard. The ceremony is impressive. Nettie Andres celebrated her birthday on June 29 with family members gathering for dinner at an area restaurant. Yummy meals were enjoyed by all. I recently had the pleasure of getting to tour the Paul Brown Stadium with Me- lissa, Chad, Callie, Cooper, and Carter Barrett. They held tours in honor of the fiftieth Anniversary of the O Gerhard and Lynn Deddens at the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. team. Walking on the playing field was awesome, a first for all of us! The stadium cov- ers twenty-two acres of land and has a seating capacity of 65,515 seats. We even got to go inside the lockers rooms. The entire tour was very interesting. LOGAN By Myrtle White Community Correspondent [email protected] Wow, what a humid, hot summer with plenty of rain. When we get some cooler, dry days with low humidity, it will feel really good. Still, summer months are better than those cold, snowy win- ters, so let’s enjoy our sum- mer and fall. I want to tell you about my great granddaughter, Hailey Rogers. I was out under a shade tree in the front yard, not paying attention to the passing cars. Megan, Hailey’s mother, was driving past and Hailey, not two years old, started yelling to her mother, “See grandma, want to see grandma, see grandpa, want to see grandma.” She never stopped talking. Megan said they got to the old North Dearborn School and finally turned around and came back. Hailey was very happy; we played and had a good time until about 9:15. It was get- ting dark as a deer, a doe, came across the road into our lower yard. We watched her go into the bean field. When the deer was pretty far away, she put up her tail and held it up. Megan asked Hailey, “What color is that tail?” Hai- ley said, “White, it is white”. Pretty good for a little girl not even two years old yet. While going through our bookcase, I found an old Indi- ana Educational Series Third Reader book, copyright 1888 to 1899. On the back of the book is written Third Reader. Price 25 cents. Written on the front page is “Earl White, Lo- gan, October 1, 1901.” (Earl White died in France during World War I). The stories in this book are really good, but they seem like they would be for the sixth or seventh-grade level. Here are a couple of verses of a poem from “Old Aunt Mary’s” by James Whitcome Riley. “Wasn’t it pleasant, O brother of mine, In those old days of the lost sunshine, Of youth - when the Saturday’s chores were through, And the Sunday’s wood in the kitchen too, And we went visiting, me and you, Out at Old Aunt Mary’s. It all comes back so clear today! Though I am bald and you are gray, Out by the barn lot and down the lane, We patter along in the dust again, As light as the tips of the rain. Out at Old Aunt Mary’s”. The poem has more verses, but I wanted you to see what an 1899 to 1901 third grade reader printed. Becky Brock sends this message to Tamara Taylor thanking her for the March, April, May and June editions of the Beacon. “I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed catching up and the article about my cousin, Jim Lyttle. The article was great. I even learned things about him that I did not know. Of course, I was about ten years younger than him when that stuff was going on. I made cop- ies for my daughter to save. I am Becky Brock and live in South Carolina, but my favorite destination vacation is BRIGHT, IN where many of my family members live. Myrtle White is my mom’s sister, and Gloria Carter is my cousin’s wife. So more Beacon connections. Thanks for all your help. My husband, and possibly daughter and her family, plan to be in Bright for Thanksgiving. Hope to see you then.” After all, it is our attitude toward life that brings us joy in living.
