Chrissy Heim Mathews of
Bright has been selected as
a finalist for the Ms.Veteran
America 2017 Contest, to
be held in Washington, DC
on October 8. This is not a
traditional beauty pageant,
although a talent event and an
evening gown (with combat
boots) event are included.
This beauty pageant, spon-
sored by Final Salute, Inc.
is to bring awareness and
advocacy to the homeless
women veteran crisis in our
country. Over 55,000 home-
less women veterans can be
found in our country on any
given day. They are currently
the fastest growing homeless
population in America. Over
half of homeless women vet-
erans are single mothers. The
mission of Final Salute Inc. is
to provide homeless women
veterans with safe and suit-
able housing. Chrissy is a US
Navy veteran (1988-92) and
is the 1st Vice Commander
of AMVETS Post #13, West
Harrison, IN, as well as
the Indiana Department of
AMVETS - District IV 1st
O
Vice Commander. To support

I stopped by the Bright
Farmers Market last Friday
and had a nice visit with
Molly Resendes, Educator
and Outreach Coordinator
from Dearborn County Recy-
cling. Molly told me about the
newly renovated Reuse Cre-
ation Station. The purpose of
the Creation Station is to save
landfill space by giving away
(FREE) new or slightly used
school supplies and craft ma-
terials for Dearborn County
churches, schools, Scouts, and
other non-profit organizations.
All items in the Creation Sta-
tion are donated. If you have
a need to create or craft, visit
the Creation Station at 10700
Prospect Lane, Aurora. Please
check out the website for
more information.
September is one of my fa-
vorite months. Everyone has
settled into a new school year
routine and schedule, foot-
ball has started, and a smell
is in the air of the soon-to-be
change in season. Here at At
the Barn Winery, most of the
grapes have been harvested
and are fermenting, long-

ing to be the wine we can all
enjoy in 2018. Five varieties
of vines on the property are
old enough to harvest. Our
estate wines for next year will
be Concord, Niagara, Cayuga
White, Catawba, and for the
first year, we hope to have a
generous yield from the Foch
vines. Stop by and taste some
of our new wines, especially
the award winners from this
summer.

Hello HVL. Can you be-
lieve Labor Day is in just a
couple of weeks? Time flies.
We have a very special note:
Phil Ohlhaut (father of Jose-
phine) submitted this article:
“The Ohlhaut family would
like to extend our most sin-
cere gratitude for the prayers
and support so many won-
derful people have eagerly
extended. We are truly over-
whelmed by the outpouring of
love from the community.
We are still trying to come
to terms with the tragic loss of
our beloved Josephine. Wit-
nessing the gathering at the
memorial at the beach helps
to fill our hearts and reminds

us of the impact she had on so
many people.
The cards, flowers, food,
and gifts have brought com-
fort and sustenance, and we
deeply appreciate the immedi-
ate response from such a large
number of generous souls.
We can quite literally feel
your prayers and believe that
is what continues to sustain us
during this incredibly painful
time.
Please continue to pray
for our family and know that
God is using your prayers in a
most profound and powerful
way. “
Please continue to pray and
support the Ohlhaut family.

We need to give a huge
“Thank you” to the HVL

a beautiful Saturday morn-
ing for fifty-four kiddos who
participate in this annual
event. The HVL Fish & Game
group did an amazing job
hosting with more than fifteen
wonderful sponsors. They
provided breakfast and lunch
for all the eager participants
and their families.

Pastor Tom Frey from St.
John’s Lutheran Church, Hub-
bells Corner, recently made the
announcement that he will be
retiring November 1. He and
his wife, Linda, will be head-
ing into retirement and hope to
Nate and Jeanette Webb
do some traveling which will
include visiting all the churches
he has
pastored over
the years. I
remember
doing a story
in this
column on
Pastor Tom
when he and
Pastor Tom Frey Linda moved
back to the
area several years ago. Time
sure does fly! I feel certain that
his congregation will greatly
miss him.
Speaking of Pastor Tom…
He recently performed the
marriage ceremony for my
son Nate Webb and his wife,
Jeanette(DiGiovenale) Webb.
We are so thankful to him and
Linda for being there. It was a
beautiful outdoor ceremony at
the Dearborn Country Club, and
we could not have found a bet-
ter celebrant. At the rehearsal,
I started to get stressed over
the weather forecast predicted
for the wedding day, May 27,
but both Pastor Frey and Linda
convinced me that it would all
work out. And wouldn’t you
know, it did! No rain. Pastor
Frey mentioned that he has
probably performed more than
five hundred marriages over the
years, and Nate and Jeanette
feel privileged to have been part
of that number.
Happy 40th Wedding Anni-
versary to Bayard and Pauletta
Pelsor who recently celebrated
with an Anniversary Luau!
