Hello everyone in the Beacon area ! I love reading all of the articles in the Beacon because they are very interesting and a good way to keep up with a lot of things going on around us .
We got to watch the farmers harvest their crops across the road from my house . Watching them was very interesting . They knew exactly what to do and kept working until every single thing was finished . So , by the time this article comes out , the corn will also be picked . Then I can see everything all the way over to Gaynor Road and see the deer and geese . The geese like finding any corn that might have fallen on the ground . They keep busy going back and forth across the field , then fly away to a lake or ponds . The geese come back about

Happy Birthday , Moores Hill ! On Sept . 22 , the town celebrated its bicentennial . It really was a joyous occasion to see hundreds of people return to their hometown to celebrate the town ’ s heritage and history . The festivities began with a parade winding through town that started at the firehouse , traveled along Manchester Street , headed west along Main Street , and ended at Historic Carnegie Hall . In addition , the National Anthem was being sung by Dave Wismann , and the colors were presented by the Vietnam Veterans .
Todd Russel served as Master of Ceremonies . His first and most important task was crowning the town ’ s royalty . What a privilege to honor some of the town ’ s lifelong residents . Bill Ison was crowned King . At ninetythree years young , Mr . Ison has lived in Moores Hill for sixty-two years . What he loves most about living in the town is the feeling of living in a safe , secure community . He remembers hanging out at the pool hall and when milk was delivered to your front door by a local dairy . The Queen of Moores Hill is Virginia “ Jenny ” Taylor Emery . Jenny has lived her entire life in Moores Hill . At eighty-four years young , Jenny says she has fond memories of walking home from school and stopping at Buster Brown ’ s place where the men would gather and play poker . She also remembers when electricity was brought to the town and what a difference it made in everyone ’ s lives . Crowned the Prince is Clarence “ Batch ” Batchelor . Batch lives in what once was the town funeral home . He said that in his forty-seven years of living in an old funeral home , no one has ever come back to give him any problems . Batch
every day if the ground isn ’ t covered by snow .
Now it is time to get ready for Halloween . Seeing the decorations everywhere is fun , but the best part of the holiday is seeing the children in their costumes . Then comes pumpkin carving . Cleaning out the pumpkin and deciding whether to make a smiley face or a scary one is not easy . So the last few years I have been using a black marker and painted the face on my pumpkin . Then the pumpkin can be used for pumpkin pies . Yum !!
Today is grocery shopping day . I buy all kinds of food and then can ’ t decide what I want to prepare for each meal . Let ’ s decide to eat healthy food . Okay , most of the time !
There is a rainbow in the sky for you . It is God ’ way of saying , “ Howdy do .” No matter where you roam , you are never there alone . You know He ’ s always there with you . He will help you if you ask him to . He will keep the sun shining , and when you are in need of love , just lift your eyes above and there is a Rainbow in the sky just for you .
Poem from Edna Eschenbac .

says he loves his community and his neighbors . The Moores Hill Princess is Marie Thompson . At eighty-seven years young , Marie has lived in town for sixty-four years . Marie worked at the school and saw many generations pass through the hallways . When asked to describe Moores Hill in one word , she replied , “ Home . It is so peaceful and quiet . It ’ s just a nice little town . It ’ s home .” I would agree with Marie . Moores Hill is home .
Throughout the day , visitors got to enjoy entertainment by local musicians . A special presentation was made by The University of Evansville Shepard Brass . ( For those of you who may not know , Moores Hill College was relocated to Evansville , Indiana in the early 1900 ’ s and is now the University of Evansville .) The UE Shepard Brass ensemble performed inside Carnegie Hall ’ s auditorium . What a treat to see their tribute to their shared history with Moores Hill .
On the Carnegie Hall lawn , visitors were treated to special period-specific demonstrations , such as broom making , the wood turners , soap making , the living history of the Civil War , and my favorite , the blacksmith . My dad , John Cummins , is the Indiana Blacksmith Association ’ s Blacksmith of the Year recipient and lives right here in Moores Hill .
The day was indeed one of comradery , fellowship , and fun . The members of the Bicentennial celebration committee put forth countless hours to bring the little town back to life . Seeing so many people reconnected was heartwarming as they shared memories of their time in Moores Hill . It was certainly a nice stroll down memory lane .
