U . S . Air Force Airman Lindsay S . Kervin-Suesz

Airman Lindsay S . Kervin-Suesz graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland , San Antonio , Texas .

The airman completed an intensive , eightweek program that included training in military discipline and studies , Air Force core values , physical fitness , and basic warfare principles and skills .

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force .

Ms . Kervin-Suesz is the daughter of Lori Kervin of Moores Hill , and Joseph Suesz

A 2016 Lawrenceburg High School graduate and Lawrenceburg , Indiana , native is serving as part of the Pre- Commissioning Unit for the future Arleigh Burke-class destroyer , USS Thomas Hudner ( DDG 116 ).

Petty Officer 3rd Class Elijah McNaughton is a fire controlman assigned to DDG 116 in Bath , Maine .

As a fire controlman AFC3 McNaughton is responsible for maintaining and operating equipment that guides missiles .

“ The people I work with are interesting , to say the least ,” said AFC3 McNaughton . “ There ’ s never a dull moment .

Arleigh Burke class destroyers measure approximately 500 feet long and are powered by four gas turbines that allow the ship to achieve over 30 mph in open seas . Destroyers are tactical multi-mission surface combatants capable of conducting anti-air warfare , anti-submarine warfare , antisurface warfare , and ballistic missile defense , as well as humanitarian assistance . Fast , maneuverable , and technically advanced , destroyers provide the required warfighting expertise and operational flexibility to execute a variety of missions .

Thomas J . Hudner Jr . was a naval aviator who received the Medal of Honor from President Harry S . Truman for displaying uncommon valor during an attack on his element leader , the first African American naval aviator to fly in combat , Ensign Jesse L . Brown .

The Bright Lions Club hosted its first annual cook-out for graduating seniors who will be entering the military .

This year ’ s honorees were Hannah Baker who will be entering the US Marines , Jade Ellis who is going into the US Army , Sara Miller who is joining the US Army National Guard , and Emily Whitehead who will be a part of the Indiana National Guard .

Sara Miller , a graduate from ECHS , enlisted into the Indiana Army National Guard . She leaves for basic training in August and will train in Ft . Jackson , South Carolina .

DDG 116 will be named in Captain Hudner ’ s honor .

AFC3 McNaughton has carried lessons learned from his hometown into his military service .

“ Growing up in Lawrenceburg , working together and

giving back was huge ,” said AFC3 McNaughton . “ Everywhere you looked you saw generosity , and AFC3 Elijah people

McNaughton helping others .”

AFC3 McNaughton has

military ties with family members who have previously served and is honored to carry on the family tradition . “ My great-grandfather served in World War II on a submarine ,” said McNaughton . “ His character influenced my decision to join the Navy . My older brother is currently serving as a cavalry scout in the Army ,” he said .

She will then move on to Ft . Lee , Virginia . Ms . Miller is currently going on as a 92Y which is Unit Supply Specialist but hopes to obtain 35F military intelligence in the future . She decided to enlist in the National Guard because she wants to go to college for criminology and obtain her master ’ s degrees .

“ I want to better my future and serve my country like my grandfather and other family members have ,” said Ms . Miller

Ms . Miller has entered into a six-year contract but plans to make this her career . proudest accomplishment is completing a specialized fire control system school .

“ It ’ s allowed me to work on new equipment and made my job challenging and rewarding on the Hudner ,” he added .

Close living conditions build strong fellowship among the crew , Navy officials explained . The crew is highly motivated and quickly adapts to changing conditions . It is a busy life of specialized work , watches , and drills .

As a member of one of the U . S . Navy ’ s newest ships , AFC3 McNaughton and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes by providing the Navy the nation needs .

“ By serving in the Navy , I believe I ’ m giving back to those who have gone before me ,” said AFC3 McNaughton . “ The Navy is not just a job to me ; it ’ s a family working together to protect our loved ones back home .”

The construction of the ship is over 98 % complete . The ship is scheduled for commissioning in late 2018

Emily Whitehead is a 2018 graduate of East Central High School . She enlisted in the Indiana Army National Guard last year in March , attended Basic Combat Training over the summer of 2017 , and came back to finish her senior year at East Central . Ms . Whitehead plans to complete her training in August She will become a military policeman , and then attend Ball State University in the spring of 2019 .

Ms . Whitehead plans to major in Environmental Science or a similar curriculum

“ I have been given many opportunities in the National Guard and am excited to see what God has in store for my future ’” said Ms . Whitehead .
