July 2018 THE BEACON Page 7A Assessed Valuation Expected to Rise Sesquicentennial recipients from the Timke and Crum Farms in Ripley County Hoosier Homestead Awards Recently at the Indiana Statehouse, Lieutenant Gov- ernor Suzanne Crouch and Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director Bruce Kettler presented families with a Hoosier Homestead Award. In honor of Indiana’s rich agricultural heritage, the Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned by the same fam- ily for one hundred years or more. The farm must consist of more than twenty acres or produce more than $1000 of agricultural products per year. Indiana farms may qualify for three honors: Centen- nial Award for 100 years of ownership, Sesquicenten- nial Award for 150 years of ownership, and the Bicenten- nial Award for 200 years of ownership. The program began in 1976 and recognizes the contri- butions these family farms have made to the economic, cultural and social advance- Centennial recipients from the Kohlman Farm in Ripley County ments of Indiana. In the past thirty years, more than five thousand farms have received the honor. Using only one year of data has not been an option for over eleven years. Dearborn County is not alone in being impacted by the upturn in the real estate market. Ripley County has seen a 14% increase in thir- teen market areas. Form 11 notices of assess- ment will be sent to home- owners in August. The Notice of Assessment of Land and Improvements (Form 11) is an assessment notice that is sent to taxpayers by the county or township assessor. The assessed value on Form 11 is the starting point for calculating annual property tax payments. The deadline for appeal of the assessments is forty-five days.
