The Beer , Bands & BABA- Q festival was held at the Bright Firehouse Oct . 14 . Thanks to everyone who came out for a beautiful , fun day in Bright . About five hundred attended the inaugural event . Live , local music entertained all day . Face painting and bounce houses were fun for the kids at this family-friendly event . I would love to thank each person who took part in this event . While there are so many people to thank , I will surely miss someone , so I best not start . A mass of people is needed to put on an event like this , and I will mark this one down as a success .
John Lennon is credited with the quote , “ Life happens when you are busy making other plans .” That is so true . Plans change in a minute , and sometimes I need a scorecard to keep up . I had every intention of manning At The Barn ’ s wine booth at the BABA-Q festival when the parking situation changed , and I ended

up driving the little school bus from All Saint ’ s Parish in Dover . I had so much fun talking to people while shuttling festivalgoers from St . Teresa ’ s to the firehouse all day , and I hope my passengers will forgive me for a few bumps here and there . I requested that everyone address me as “ Shuttle Commander ,” but almost no one did . Next time , I will have a T-Shirt made . We do appreciate both churches helping us out on such short notice . When I talked to Emily Alig at All Saint ’ s Parish , she said , “ Debby , it ’ s all about community .” Thanks , Emily , for the wise words .
Downtown Bright is constantly changing , and I can ’ t wait to see what will happen on the corner of Stateline and Megrue , and on the corner of Stateline and Jamison Dr . Many people are speculating , but we ’ ll just have to wait and see for sure . Bright is

Don and I wish everyone a lovely Thanksgiving . I pray that everyone has someone with whom they will enjoy the meal . Please remember to tell the cook or cooks thank you for the time and expertise it took to prepare the meal . Please take time to enjoy the time with family and friends . Make a point of having a conversation with each person at your table . Erma Bombeck ( I ’ m showing my age again ) said that it takes on the average , eighteen hours to prepare a Thanksgiving meal and only twelve minutes to consume it . It is no coincidence that ( football ) half-times are twelve minutes as well .
All Saints Parish is sponsoring the Gobble Wobble- a run / walk that begins at 9 am on Thanksgiving morning at the St . Johns Campus in Dover . Thanksgiving is coming up on us quickly ! You may have already bought your turkey or a least planned your menu for the big day . Don ’ t forget to watch the Macy ’ s Day Parade from NYC at 9 AM ! ( yes , our family loves the parade ) HVL Children ’ s Activity Committee had an amazing turnout for the annual Haunted Hayride . We would like to give a HUGE “ THANK YOU ” to all of the volunteers who make this event a success . Truck drivers , non-profit vendors , folks who scare , residents along the route ( amazing efforts !) and all of the others who participate . Mother Nature even brought us an 80 degree , sunny Saturday . Unbelievable !!! Save the date for Santa ’ s Workshop on Dec . 3 . Details TBA .

Thanksgiving is a happy holiday . We have a great family gathering which takes a lot of food preparation and work but is well worth it . Everyone prepares their best and favorite dishes to make a great meal and a great day . For entertainment , the ladies and children play Bingo while the guys play cards , mostly Euchre . We may all eat too much , but that ’ s okay ! We will be fine . Let us all enjoy
our time together and give thanks .
I will share a family memory . Many years ago in my young teenage years , we used to have a salesman going from door to door selling “ Watkins ” products . My mom would buy Watkins Vanilla and Watkins Black Diamond Liniment . This liniment was for bruises and sore muscles and backs . They also had a white ointment and a yellow ointment for cuts and scrapes . That was our mom ’ s list for the Watkins salesman . One evening my sister Frances must have been coming down with the flu ; she was complaining about her back hurting . So Mom told her to get the Watkins liniment , and she would rub her back real good ,
and then she could go to bed . They got that done , and Fran and Joyce went to bed . Well , when I went upstairs to get ready for bed and walked through Fran and Joyce ’ s room , I could smell a strong scent of vanilla . Fran was already asleep , but asked Joyce , “ Can ’ t you smell that vanilla ? I think mom must have rubbed vanilla on her .” She had brought mom the wrong bottle ! Those bottles were both brown and had the same kind of labels . I went back downstairs and said , “ Mom , you put vanilla on Fran ’ s back instead of liniment .” Mom said , “ Tell her to come back downstairs , and I will put the liniment on her back .” Well , the vanilla must have worked as she was already asleep . So we both had a good laugh . Odd things happen in families and make good memories .
Today is a warm , beautiful day . Some trees have the lovely fall colors . However , a lot of them still have green leaves . Maybe we will have a nice long fall season before winter arrives . The Gaynor farmers are harvesting their soybean crop behind our house , At the Barn Winery , Barb ’ s home , and Thelma Stutz ’ s homes today . It is always good to see the crops harvested . We all want the farmers to keep working and having good crops . We certainly do need our farmers . They keep us going , and we should thank them all .
We wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving . Now we can start getting ready for the Christmas holidays- that will take a lot of work and planning .
Happy birthday to all the November birthdays , and to my brother and sister .
Abraham Lincoln said this many years ago , but it still holds true for today . “ With Malice toward none , with Charity for all , with firmness in the right , as God gives us to see the right , let us strive on to finish the work we are in , to bind up the nation ’ s wounds .”
