Nothing says fall like festivals , autumn drives , fall excursions , and that last ice cream cone before the ice cream shops close for the winter . Why do they entice you with pumpkin spice ice cream when they are closing the next day ? This is one of life ’ s great mysteries .
I recently took a trip to Wisconsin for a family wedding . I enjoy discovering the slight differences between other cultures and that of southeastern Indiana residents . People in Wisconsin eat a lot of cheese , summer sausage , and brats ( on buttered bread ). My grocery store adventures revealed large displays of a large variety of cheeses and sausages . I was surprised to learn that spice cake is a common flavor for a wedding cake in Wisconsin . The wedding ’ s main course was followed by dancing at which time pizza was served . What a sensible and fun way to end the evening . As a side note , a few Wisconsin relatives came to visit Indiana last week . Their one request was to try Skyline for the first time . So we gathered up a few relatives , Nani Schwier and Rachel Acasio , and headed to the local Skyline . The employees were kind enough to give the “ Wisconsinites ” a small sample before they ordered their own 4-way . They were not overly impressed , but I assured them that they would be craving it next week . They did not believe me .
Speaking of getting away , Jean and Jim Fouch of Ludlow Hill recently took a fall cruise of the eastern seaboard . They left from Newark , sailing past the Statue of Liberty , and then on to Boston , Newport , Bar Harbor , Rockland , Portland , Nova Scotia , and Prince Edward Island . They concluded their thirteen-day trip in Canada and flew home to Cincinnati . Who could have guessed what a wise decision it was to book a northern cruise instead of one in the path of hurricanes Irma and Maria !
The Lawrenceburg Event Center and Dearborn County Historical Society recently hosted quilt shows on the same weekend in September . Among other historical quilts ,

A Hawaiian quilt made in the 1940 ' s was displayed .
they displayed a unique and valuable Hawaiian quilt that was on loan from a Dearborn County family . The quilt was made by their Hawaiian grandmother in the 1940 ’ s and featured the Hawaiian state flag . Jen Awad worked tirelessly to put the show together . She and Joyce Baer also cataloged many old photos donated by families who want to preserve their Dearborn County history .
Fall is not complete without the homecoming game and parade through downtown Lawrenceburg . This year each class picked a decade for the theme of their float . Since the senior class chose the fifties as their decade , it is only natural that the boys would look “ cool ” and the girls would wear poodle skirts . One senior mother , Donna Pennington , managed to put together nine poodle skirts for some of the girls on the senior float . Great

Sunman has been quite busy as we transition into fall , but there is still more to come !
Salute A Soldier 5k had a successful and patriotic day on September 9th . People from throughout the tri-state area came together to honor and remember our veterans . The runner winners were Brad Barry and Ally Reyes . The walker winners were Kathy Kramer and Byron Wilber . It is great to see this race grow throughout the past few years .
The first-ever Fall Festival also took place on Sept . 9 after the race . Two of the homemade winning wines this year were made by Danny Puckett and Ralph Johnson . They won best dry wine and best grape wine . Their grapes are grown on the Metz farm . The grapes are grown by Dave Metz and Danny Puckett . Their wines have also won bronze medals in the Indy International competition .
The newest restaurant of Sunman opened on September 12 and is located inside of the legion . It was named The Dive after Kenneth L . Diver . The Dive will be hosting a Fall Dance on October 21 . Dan Gutapfel and his band , “ Inner Soul ” will be playing . The legion also hosts Bingo every Monday night . Early Birds starts at 6:30 p . m . and regular bingo is at 7 p . m . The Lawrenceburg boys ’ soccer team had their last home game of the season on Sept 24 with a win against Greensburg . The day was a scorcher with the turf field reaching 103 degrees ! The game was called after the first half due to the heat . Since senior recognition day was planned , the boys were introduced with their parents before the game . Some of the boys have been playing soccer for fourteen years , starting at age 3 . Their ambitions range from becoming doctors and engineers to pilots . The team has sustained many injuries this year , but they still love their game .
Congratulations to Macie Schutte for placing second in the 500 yard freestyle during the swim meet between Greendale Middle School and Connersville . Macie is the daughter of Rob and Laura
hangout ! Members of the 1952 Sunman High School class met recently to celebrate their sixty-fifth anniversary of their high school graduation . Everyone enjoyed reminiscing about the " good old days " as well as catching up with recent times . Out of an original class of twenty , seven of the remaining eleven were in attendance . At the end of the night they decided they would meet at the same time and same place next year to continue making more memories together .
The students at St . Nicholas School held a “ Toothpaste Drive ” to support Haiti through the dental crisis they are currently experiencing . They collected toothpaste tubes for St . Anthony ’ s Haiti Mission in Gandou , Haiti . The students supplied over 260 large tubes of toothpaste .

The Lawrenceburg area is entering an exciting time in history . It is hard to imagine what the addition of the new port will mean to us . We can only hope that some fall activities will never change — homecoming parades , team sports that encourage our children , fall festivals and autumn drives to an orchard .

Last month ’ s question had lots of responses . The question was , “ Who rode a cow to St . Nicholas School and back home after spending the day at school ?” David Batta thought that it was Marvin Billman because he was a little wild . Donna Ertel guessed Maurice , Al , and Mike Hartman . Mary Ann Hartman had it right too . The correct answer is Al and Mike Hartman . Al rode the cow , Old Belle , to school and his brother Mike rode it back home on their last day of school one year . This month ’ s question is , “ What building was built from the materials of the Old Brick Church after it was torn down ?” Send me an email with your answer .
I would like you to let me know about family milestones , vacation , or a little bit about Sunman and yourself . Share the good news with me at sunman @ GOBEACONnews . com .
