Happy Holidays Harrison!
We transitioned into Christmas
in a big way as we welcomed
the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree
on November 23rd. The weath-
er was unusually warm for this
time of the year and the turn
out for the event around 3,000
people! The iceless skating rink
kept the kids busy while parents
shopped and supported local
stores. Many residents took the
opportunity to sign the side of
the truck. The choirs singing in
the background really pulled in
the holiday spirit.
Congratulations to Boy Scout
Troop 293! They won the 2018
Best Decorated Christmas Tree.
The tree was decked out with
lights and tiny tents. Thank
you to Market Street Grille for
sponsoring the tree!
With daylight time becom- On Nov. 4, Carnegie Hall
hosted its annual Thanksgiv-
ing dinner. Nearly four hun-
dred people attended the free
meal prepared and organized
by the Ickenroth family.
Linda Ickenroth is president
of Carnegie’s board of direc-
tors and spearheads this event
each year. Many volunteers
come together to make the
day special. Getting to enjoy
food and fellowship inside
the auditorium of the historic
Carnegie Hall is quite nostal-
gic. Visiting with the town’s
people and reminiscing about
the good ole days when Carn-
egie Hall was Moores Hill
School was a pleasure. Some-
how over time, the classrooms
of that building got smaller
over the years. Thanks to the
Carnegie Hall board of direc-
tors for hosting this annual
feast and for bringing our
small town together.
Gary and Allie Blackburn
are celebrating the holidays
with their new granddaughter,
Kooper Menne. Her par-
ents are Brianna and Jason
Menne, and proud sister is
Kendall.
As we all enjoy the spirit
of the holidays and we give
thanks for our bountiful
blessings, I would like to
share a tradition my fam-
ily started a few years
ago. Today’s Christmas is
much different than Christ-
mas when I was a child.

ing shorter each day, our street
lights that are not illuminating
become much more notice-
able. Duke Energy would like
to remind Harrison to do their
part to keep the lights on here in
Harrison. If you see a light out,
or any other issue with light-
ing, it is easy to make a request
on their website, and they will
make the repair as quickly as
possible.
On Nov. 15, Harrison woke
up to a sheet of ice. Power
outages were widespread and
lasted for days in some parts of
town. I am still hearing positive
stories of neighbors helping
neighbors, rather it be a hot
meal or addressing the many
trees that did not make it. City
or Township residents needing
protection from the cold were
welcomed to a warming center
at the City of Harrison Com-
munity Center, where cots and
blankets were provided. As al-
ways, our town sticks together
when the time calls for it!
Do you have any news to
share? Whether it is an upcom-
ing event or a person doing
something worth noting? I
would love to hear from you!

The Sisters help in the local
area as volunteers at the Food
Pantry, bell ringers for the
Salvation Army, educators for
those with physical handicaps,
and spiritual directors for
those seeking guidance. With-
in the Motherhouse the Sisters
prepare crafts and candies
for their Gift Shop, welcome
guests and serve as tour
guides, share their musical tal-
ents at liturgies and seek ways
to serve the under-served from
their home in Oldenburg.
The Sisters recently em-
barked upon a new ministry to
help the inner-city homeless
by making sleeping mats from
recycled plastic bags. The
Sisters see this as a way to
recycle plastic bags, keeping
them out of landfills, and a

The Sisters open their home
for Christmas Tours each year

from 6-8 p.m. on Dec. 27 to
share in their Christmas tradi-

are seeking the true meaning
of Christmas, I encourage you
to visit the Sisters and expe-
rience the joy they share in
serving God.
Frohe Weihnachten aus der
‘Burg!
Most readers are aware that
I work with the Sisters of St.
Francis in Oldenburg, and
several have inquired about
the number of Sisters in the
community, their ministries,
and about the activities of our
retired Sisters.
By the numbers, today there
are one hundred seventy-nine
Sisters, most of whom are
retired and live in the Moth-
erhouse while approximately
sixty Sisters remain in active
ministry serving in roles of par-
ish leadership, education, social
services, and spiritual direction
in: CA, IA, IL, IN, KY, MI,
MO, MT, NM, OH, and TX.
Retirement is a term that
is used in reference to the
Sisters in the Motherhouse…
but I learned a new definition
of retirement when I came
to work in Oldenburg. The
Sisters who have “retired”
lead busy lives. Their primary
focus is prayer as they pray
for the nation, their local
Village of Oldenburg and for
the many prayer requests that
they receive.
In addition, many par-
ticipate in the Adopt-A-Sis
program which pairs a Sister
I remember sitting down
with the Sears catalog and
making a list of all the
things I wanted. There was
no shortage of ideas for
Santa Claus. By the time
Christmas arrived, I think
I had the entire catalog
memorized. Christmas
was always a special time
because it was the one time
of year that my sister and I
were showered with gifts.
Fast forward forty years
when my children already
have everything they’ve
ever wanted. As a parent, it
became increasingly dif-
ficult to think of ideas for
Christmas, and my children
could hardly think of any-
thing to put on their wish
list. Realizing how blessed
my family was, I decided
to start a new tradition of
sharing our blessings with
each other. Beginning Dec.
1 through Dec. 24, each day
we would write an inspira-
tional note to each member
of our family on a notecard
and we would put them in
each person’s stocking so
that on Christmas Eve, we
each had twenty-four notes
from each member of our
family. Then on Christmas
Eve, we would turn on
Christmas music, and we all
got to read our notes that we
had written to one another.
We shared many laughs and
tears as we read our notes to
each other, but most impor-
tantly we shared feelings of
love and appreciation for
one another. This was, by
far, the best Christmas gift
we could give each other.
I have kept my note cards
from each year as a constant
reminder of all the things
for which I am thankful.
