The holidays are always a whirlwind of activity in Lawrenceburg- breakfast with Santa , the PAWS pet parade , Santa ’ s workshop and ice skating . The library never fails to disappoint with their wide variety of activities including the Children ’ s Theatre of Cincinnati performance of “ Celebrate the Season “ and a visit from Santa with live reindeer .
Lawrenceburg offered many opportunities for Christmas shopping . The shopping was kicked off in November by the PAWS rummage sale which drew large crowds for the great deals . The next week the Over The Moon Vintage Market at Agner Hall had

long lines of shoppers waiting for the doors to open . The food stand at this event is always a crowd pleaser with all homemade food and desserts . Carolyn Stroup ’ s chocolate chip cookies and salted caramel chocolate cake was a hit this year . Barb Scherzinger ’ s cheese cake was a sellout . Rachel Thies and her husband Rob made Tuscan sausage potato soup for the event . Many shoppers were happy ! That same weekend , The Event Center hosted a Holiday Shopping Expo that offered entertainment and gift / craft booths over a three day period . My favorite

was a hand carved frog that sounded like a real frog when you stroked his back with a tiny wooden mallet . I didn ’ t buy one , and I still regret it . Debby Stutz and her daughter Diane Vollner from At The Barn Winery were just one of the vendors at the shopping expo .
The Dearborn County Retired Teachers meet every Thursday to sew at the Lawrenceburg Community Center . They make shorts for boys and dresses for girls ( with matching hair bow ) from pillow cases or leftover scraps of material . The finished products are sent to such places as the Sudan , Honduras , and the Amazon . Organizations such as Love the Hungry and Operation Christmas Child benefit from their handiwork . Marilyn Warneford showed me a “ What is it ” tool that she finds invaluable- an elastic threader that she bought years ago . Judy Baker , Rhonda Dorst , Wanda Pitzer and Fayla Nance were happy to show me the beautiful finished products . They are always eager for volunteers if you like to sew .
I attended the Lawrenceburg High School Men ’ s Soccer banquet and award ceremony . It was a proud moment for Coach DeWayne Uhlman as he handed out 10 Indiana Coaches Association High School All-Academic Player of the Year Awards to his players . These young men had 3.7 or higher grade point average while still keeping up with the grueling schedule of practice and soccer games . The team had 18 juniors and seniors . Ten of them received this academic award . Not a bad average ! Congratulations to Kyle Sharpshair ( the keeper ) for receiving the outstanding player award .
Speaking of outstanding , a big thank you should be given to firefighter Brandon Givan for the excellent tour of the firehouse he gave to Janet Knigga ’ s preschool class . The kids enjoyed a film , a chance to sit in a fire truck and a “ stop , drop , and roll ” demonstration . However , they were not satisfied until they got to see Brandon slide down the fire pole .
While visiting Lawrenceburg High School , I noticed flyers for a Sadie Winter formal dance . I had to chuckle because I was not sure if the kids knew what a Sadie dance was . While the flyer said it was a girl ask boy dance , I had to do a little research myself to refresh my memory . Some of you may remember that Sadie Hawkins was a character from the cartoon strip Lil Abner created by Al Capp . The unmarried women of Dogpatch got to chase the bachelors and marry the ones they caught . This cartoon ran on November 15 , 1937 . By 1952 , the Sadie Hawkins dance was celebrated at 40,000 known venues in the US and Canada . If we fast forward to 2017 , this tradition is still going strong in Lawrenceburg . It looks like someone at the high school likes history .

I was surprised and happy to see the article by Nicole Williams in last month ' s Beacon about Fallen Timbers Sorghum Mill . The mill is owned and operated by Dr . Larry Barlow right here in Ripley County . I also had been out to spend an October afternoon learning about harvesting sorghum , and Ms . Williams documented pretty much the same experience I had when I went to check out what Dr . Barlow and his crew were up to . I have passed Fallen Timbers Sorghum Mill hundreds of times as I make trips back and forth to Versailles , and was always curious . So earlier this year I spoke to Dr . Barlow about coming out during harvest . When he called , I didn ' t hesitate . The process starts about 5:00 in the morning when Dr . Barlow goes out to fire the wood stoves , and they usually finish around 6:00 in the evening . When I got there , they were just finishing up lunch , and were ready to start up for the afternoon session . The sorghum had been cut , stacked , and was ready to go . Dr . Barlow ' s crew on this second day of harvesting was Floyd Ison , Danny Taylor , Allen Butler and Mike Kessans . Ison , Taylor , and Kessans were heading out to do the pressing . The job of skimming off impurities from the surface of the sap fell to Dr . Barlow ' s friend , Dr . Allen Butler from Tell City . The two had met in dental school , and this is the first year he and his friend , Mike Kessens , had come to assist in the process . Dr . Barlow supervised the whole process , assisted where needed , and kept the visitors informed . I will not repeat the history and procedure since that was nicely done in last month ' s issue , but I did want to follow up and share some of my experience . I learned that Dr . Barlow and his son , Zach Barlow , have spent a good amount of time locating , salvaging ,
and refurbishing the antique agricultural pieces used in the planting , harvesting , and processing of his sorghum to recreate the process used by past generations of their family . I have also learned that Dr . Barlow has a true passion for an art that he has perfected over the years . He planted a test-crop of sorghum in 2004 to make sure sorghum would grow well in his soil , and once he was satisfied with the crop , he was ready to begin . He normally plants about one acre of sorghum . They harvested their first batch in 2005 . The day I was there they pressed and processed about twenty-five gallons of sorghum , and the yield for this season was sixty-five gallons in the three days of
