Page 18A O The St. Nicholas students put on two skits for All Saints’ Day. SUNMAN By Logan Seig Community Correspondent sunman@goBEACONnews,com I can’t believe I am already writing for the year of 2018. These past few months flew by, and it's already the holiday season! I hope everyone enjoys and cherishes their time with family friends over the next few weeks. Yes, Sunman has some talented National Champions!!! On Nov. 18- 19, the sixth grade Sunman Trojans, coached by Carl Pieczonka, went to the Rocky Top National Football Tournament in Tennessee. They won every single game in the tournament and became the sixth grade National Champions! They have won this same tournament for three years in a row. Prior to the tournament, they also had an undefeated season and won the Pee Wee Football Superbowl. Congrats on a great season boys! St. Nicholas Catholic School celebrated All Saints’ Day in a variety of ways. After Mass, the student body joined in a “Tour of the Saints”. In the afternoon, students in grades K-8 dressed as saints and paraded around the gym singing “Oh When the Saints Go Marching In”. The day ended with the 8th graders performing two skits on saints they researched and wrote a play about. The two skits were about St. Jose Sanchez del Rio and Our Lady of Fatima. It was a special day for all of the students and staff of St. Nicholas to honor the heroes in heaven. If you are looking to get out for a walk through town, you could join Dr. Martini and take a “Walk with Doc” on the first Wednesday of every month. The next one will be in January. It sounds like the perfect chance to walk off all of that delicious holiday food and start a healthy New Year's resolution. Last month’s question has proven to bring out those inquisitive residents. Many people approached one member of our community, absolutely sure that he was the mischievous youth who hit the infamous “red button” fire alarm. Alas, Bill Craig was not the culprit. Ironically, the fire chief gives the same talks to third graders every year about fire safety and the seriousness of the fire alarms. I received a few other answers. Pam Calhoun said THE BEACON January 2018 ur Communities The ribbon cutting for Main Street in Brookville was well attended. The sixth grade Sunman Trojans won the Rocky Top Football Championship. that her husband, Ronald Calhoun, retired Master Sergeant of the Sunman Fire Dept., pulled the fire alarm at Sunman High School as a young kid. Linda Stolla, my amazing aunt, told me a story about my little brother, RJ, pulling the alarm in the Sunman Dearborn Intermediate School on a teacher’s day when he was very young. This month’s question was submitted by George Klaserner. In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s there were 4 car dealerships in Sunman. Can you name each one of them? At this time there was also a population number on the Sunman highway sign. We do not know the answer to the second question, but do you?  Send me an email with your answer! I would like you to let me know about family milestones, vacation, or a little bit about Sunman and yourself. Share the good news with me at sunman@ goBEACONnews.com. FRANKLIN COUNTY By Alice Priessman Community Correspondent [email protected] Local resident and historian, John Newman had the ribbon cutting honor in recognition of the complete face lift of our Main Street in Brookville. The crews did a great job of keeping traffic flowing and businesses were pleased to see that their customers had access and ample parking dur- ing the construction process. Beautiful job. All done just in time for holiday shopping. Now more about Mr. New- man. I’ve known Mr. New- man for a number of years. We first met when he bought his home on Main Street and was looking for help with his landscape design. I knew he was a historian but didn’t know much past that. After looking a little deeper into this photo I realized just how interesting and important his job as State Archivist for the State of Indiana was. In 1986, he became the Director of Information Management for the Indiana Supreme Court. Mr. New- man was awarded the presti- gious State Historic Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) Governor's Award in 2009. Check out this link to read more about his impressive accomplishments. http:// www.in.gov/portal/news_ events/44705.htm It’s December which means it’s the most wonderful time of the year. But WHY is it the most wonderful time of the year? For me it has little to do with presents under the tree. I do love a surprise or two like most people but what I really love about Thanks- giving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve is the memories of conversations with my family and some of our very simple traditions. I’m sure many of you have had the same stories shared with you about what a Christmas was like for your grandparents. It was a big deal to get an orange, nuts and some hard candy as your Christmas gift. “Back in the day” you didn’t spend money on a cut tree from a store or farm. You went in the woods and cut down a cedar tree, made your decorations and PAMPER ED PETS CERTIFIED GROOMER GROOMING SPECIALIST SMALL CLIENTELE FOR BEST RESULTS CALL 513-374-9231 MAUREEN 1st Visit 10% Discount Specializing in Yorkies, Shih Tzu’s, Lhasa’s, Smaller Terrier Breeds and Other Small Dogs BOARDING AVAILABLE lit candles that adorned the branches of your beautiful tree on Christmas Eve. My mom tells us of a year, her best Christmas ever as a child, that my grandpa took them to a diner and bought them all a cream soda and the next morning she got a baby doll. Some of my warmest memo- ries of Christmas are at my grandparent’s house. One year my uncle Don came home from Los Angeles. We all sat in the living room and sang Christmas songs as he played my grandma’s piano. There was always eggnog. I can still see my grandpa sitting with me, both of us with an eggnog mustache. Grandma had a small white glistening snow village with tiny windows that lit up. I would sit and imagine what the people inside the homes and church were do- ing and thinking. I loved that little village. Now I have it in my home and enjoy watch- ing my grandchildren pretend and imagine. You all might remember the cardboard fire- places with the little yellow fabric that would flicker like a real fire. Yep. My mom bought us one of those beauties. I actually loved it. Did you have one of the pixie lights that made you dizzy with the circle of lights that swirled around and around? New Year’s Eve was always spent at home with my mom, dad and broth- ers and my best friend Annette who lived down the street. Mom and dad would make the best lasagna ever and at midnight we would run out- side and yell Happy New Year banging every pot and pan lid we had in the house to ring in the New Year. Very simple but awesome memories. What are your favorite holiday memo- ries? I’d love to hear from you. franklin@goBEACON- news.com Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year to all.
