We ’ re starting to get a big change in our weather with some cooler temperatures and heavy rain . I ’ m one who prefers it to be cooler rather than the hot , humid days of Summer . I hope all of you were able to spend quality time with your loved ones on Thanksgiving . We celebrated with about thirty people . I had the honor of having Thanksgiving dinner with one of America ’ s finest , a World War II Veteran , Tom Hughes . It also happens to be Tom ’ s ninety-ninth birthday . He ’ s a character .
Recently Tom took a train trip to and from San Diego with a few family members , all this at the age of 98 . Tom was highly decorated in World War II with the Silver Star , Bronze Star , and Purple Heart . He ’ s just a joy to be around , and I ’ m already looking forward to next year when he will celebrate 100 .
On Nov . 17 , Bush White celebrated his ninety-third birthday , and if you know Bush , he has some stories to tell . Both Tom and Bush have been to Washington , DC with me on our trips for veterans , and both have presented a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery at the Tomb of the Unknowns . Both men have been presented with Purple Heart plaques and also a Quilt of Valor .
I had lunch with World War II veteran , Lawrence Lyttle . Lawrence went to DC with me back in June and was a wreath presenter . His son , Jim , played Major League Baseball . Take the time if you see a World War II Veteran , to shake their hand and thank them . They ’ re slowly fading away .
By the time you read this , you ’ ll be in the Christmas Spirit and getting out to enjoy the various displays . Stop downtown at Heritage Hall to see the train display . The members put a lot of work into this project . I can ’ t help but think about my grandmother , Kittie , who was born on Dec . 25 , 1895 , and passed away in 1995 . She got married on her 18th birthday on Christmas day of 1913 shortly after graduating from high school . I still have a 1913 $ 2 ½ dollar gold piece she received on her wedding day . I can remember filming her when she was 95 and her telling me her life story . She saw so much and raised four children thru the depression after losing her husband to cancer at age 30 .
We had a good turnout for the ground breaking at the Veterans ’ Tribute Tower on the riverfront on Veterans Day . Thanks to State Representative Randy Frye for coming and speaking at the event . A huge crowd was at the Community Center for dinner for veterans . A flag burning / retirement program was held on Veterans

Day , and our Color Guard participated . Linda Elsen and daughter , Tammy , made this a day to remember for all .
I have to recognize CJ Berkley for his outlook on life . CJ doesn ’ t want gifts for his birthday but instead wants dog food , cat food , leashes , supplies , toys for animals and water bowls , etc . He donates them to the animal shelter . He ’ s encouraging younger brother , Rory , to get involved and I ’ m sure CJ is ready to start getting his newborn sister involved too . Way to go , CJ . Rising Sun is going to be seeing volunteers on the riverfront since RSHS Senior Chelsea Brown won the prize for the contest to provide a solution to a problem in town . She saw signs along highways where groups adopted a section of highway to keep it clean , so Chelsea had the idea to do that for our riverfront . The RSHS Chemistry Club has volunteered .
It ’ s time to think about Christmas , and I ’ m one of those who firmly believes in keeping CHRIST in Christmas . There are many ways to help others , and I know there are places where they have a gift tree where you can pull a name and get a gift for someone not as fortunate as you are . There are veterans out there you could help or maybe someone in your town or neighborhood .
I hope your Christmas is Blessed and you enjoy being with family and friends . It seems we ’ re all in such a rush so take time to slow down and enjoy life because it sure seems to be flying by .
May God Bless all of you hopefully 2018 will be the best year of your life .
