OCOF helps Connect the Dots in the Community
Bright Lions Buy School Supplies for
Students in Need
Dearborn Community Foundation Board member Karen
Blasdel, left, presented a grant check to Bright Lions Club
Vice President Diane Bender. The DCF grant monies
helped the Lions Club with its backpack program, a
partnership with North Dearborn Pantry, to provide school
supplies to students in need.
The Bright Lions Club was recommended by
Mrs. Blasdel as the recipient of the grant because
the organization has a strong presence in the Bright
community. Mrs. Blasdel said, “I knew they would use
the funds to help less fortunate kids. The Lions Club
has always recognized the community’s needs and then
worked to fill those needs. I liked the idea of the backpack
program because it would directly impact those that could
use a little help the most.”
Statehouse Internships Available
Indiana House Representa-
tives Randy Frye and Randy
Lyness, along with State
Senator Chip Perfect, encour-
age local college students and
recent graduates to apply for
internships with the House of
Representatives or the Senate
for the 2019 legislative ses-
sion that begins in January.
The Internship Program is
a unique opportunity for col-
lege students and graduates
to participate in state gov-
ernment and gain valuable
hands-on experience. This
paid internship at the Indiana
Statehouse in Indianapolis
takes place during the spring
semester and gives students
the chance to work one-on-
one with state legislators.
Internship positions are
open to college sophomores,
juniors, seniors, graduate
students, and recent gradu-
ates of all majors. Students
can apply for internships in a
variety of areas, focusing on
legislative, communications
and media relations, policy,
or fiscal policy.
“House interns not only
learn about the legislative
process, but they also have
the opportunity to discuss
key issues with lawmakers
and network with countless
other professionals from all
over Indiana,” said Rep. Ly-
ness. “This internship helps
students make connections
and jumpstart their careers.”
These full-time positions
run from January through
April. In addition to biweek-
ly compensation of $750,
interns can earn academic
credit through their college
or university and are eligible
to apply for a competitive
$3,000 scholarship to use
toward undergraduate or
graduate expenses.
Chosen applicants will
work at the Statehouse in
downtown Indianapolis
beginning with a mandatory
orientation in late December
and concluding at the end
of the legislative session in
April 2019.

We all hear that our com-
munity is full of opportunity
and organizations that help
with information and services,
but finding the right organiza-
tion for your specific need can
often be tricky. One Commu-
nity One Family (OCOF) has
stepped forward to help with
a resource that can provide
answers and connections.
While being located be-
tween Indianapolis and
Cincinnati gives residents
wonderful opportunities,
Southeastern Indiana is
sometimes lost in the middle
when it comes to finding
community resources. For
those struggling with a mental
health condition or addiction,
stigma has also become a bar-
rier to reaching out for help.
Because mental and substance
use disorders are the leading
cause of disability worldwide,
being able to access commu-
nity resources is imperative.
Realizing this need, The Lu-
theran Foundation launched
LookUpIndiana.org with the
plan to engage local stake-
holders to ensure each county
has accurate local information
and contacts. LookUpIndiana.
org is an online resource pro-
viding community resources
and mental and behavioral
health information, while also
offering stigma-reducing mes-
saging. Users can search for
a wide variety of information
including:
• providers near them
• information on mental health
topics
• recent news and blog posts
• upcoming training and
events
• 24/7 crisis help
LookUp provides informa-
tion helpful to various demo-
graphics including faith-com-
munities, schools, workplace,
medical providers, parents,
veterans, and youth.
Initially launched in 2016
as a regional website, LookU-
pIndiana.org has expanded
state-wide and has reached
more than 27,000 website
users.
The website offers statewide
resources as well as county-
specific pages. Information
focused on local services and
events can be found on Look-
Up’s My Community page.
Community information is
facilitated by One Community
One Family (OCOF), a locally
based agency in Southeastern
Indiana that is committed
to building and maintaining
collaborations across organi-
zations to improve the lives
of children and families in the
community. They are dedicat-
ed to ensuring that the LookU-
pIndiana.org county pages for
Dearborn, Decatur, Franklin,
ne Community
ne Family
Ohio, Ripley, and Switzerland
counties include current local
updates and resources.
