Highpoint Health Hosts Health Career Seminar

Highpoint Health has resources that could help you achieve your goal of pursuing an education in the medical field right here in Dearborn and Ohio Counties .

Investigation : Health Careers and You is an opportunity for youth in seventh to tenth grades to get hands-on learning experience at Highpoint Health and Ivy Tech School of Nursing . Students will tour Highpoint Health and visit with medical professionals to learn about their

careers and education . The tour continues at Ivy Tech for hands-on nursing in the Lab . Students will get to experience cardiac arrest , giving injections , and the placement of IV ’ s through simulated mannequins . They will have the opportunity to learn more about the medical field so that they can decide if this is the career path for them .

Investigation : Health Careers and You is an excellent opportunity to learn about the health industry and see that it is among the fastest growing industries in our economy . In fact , according to the U . S Bureau of Labor Statistics , the health industry is projected to add over four million jobs by the year 2022 .

Transportation , lunch , snacks and a t-shirt will be provided through the $ 25.00 program fee for this day of

Chamber Picnic

The Dearborn Chamber of Commerce recently hosted the third annual Chamber Family Picnic . The event was supported by Highpoint Health and the Chamber ’ s tremendous events committee staff . The picnic was held at historic Veraestau in Aurora and featured a corn hole tournament , live music , a delicious dinner , and fun activities for the kids . Over one hundred fifty chamber community members attended the special evening . This event not only helps make a stronger economy but also builds the community at the same time .

Dearborn County Retired Teachers Foundation Awards Grants

The Dearborn County Retired Teachers Foundation , Inc . recently awarded educator grants to local teachers . Recipient teachers are willing to try innovative and creative projects in their classrooms . Special thanks were given to the Betty McLaughlin Endowment , HighPoint Health , the Knights of Columbus , Los Primos , United Community Bank , and others who graciously sponsored projects .

Roy Johnson , an agricultural science instructor at ECHS , is the Dearborn County Retired Teachers ’ 2017-18 grant winner . The grant will be used to purchase a gas-powered forge to teach the fundamentals of blacksmithing . Students will have the opportunity to work with their hands and be creative .

Emma Rauch and Heather Lunsford at Sunman Elementary received a grant for their STEM ( Science Technology Engineering Mathematics ) hands-on science Makerspace project for grades K-5 . Students will experience technology , sensory stimulation ,

critical thinking , and collaborative learning . Funds from the grant will be used to purchase miniature robots that use computer code to follow student commands . Snap circuits will also help students create light and sound by completing electrical circuits . Finally , students will work with a K ’ NEX set of levers and pulleys .

Jennifer Fischer and Heather Billig , Greendale Elementary , are being sponsored by the Betty McLaughlin Endowment for seventhgrade students to work on a collaborative STEM project in which they will build Mousetrap cars . Students will design cars powered by energy released by the snap of a mousetrap . They will test , redesign , and modify their cars based on their successes / failures . They will create videos to share their experiences with their classmates .

Dianna Petty , Aurora Elementary , received sponsorship for a project with independent classroom centers to engage students in hands-on activities . The Osmos Genius Kit will be used for visual thinking activities and problemsolving games .

Erin Wuestefeld , Aurora Elementary , is in a partnership with Hands in Autism whose goal is to provide learning opportunities to improve understanding and interaction with students with autism spectrum disorder ( ASD ) and other challenges . In this project a house model is used for assessing , setting goals , teaching , and generalizing to help students with ASD become successful within the classroom . Building the environment involves setting up physical and visual structures within the classroom , creating classroom choreography , creating students ’ schedules , and creating work systems . HighPoint Health generously sponsored Ms . Wuestefeld ’ s project .

Bryan Wagner , St . Lawrence Elementary , wants to create a new physical education elective for students in grades 6-8 to include exercise , nutrition , and health . According to teacher Bryan Wagner , “ it will promote positive image and encourage students to live a healthy lifestyle .”

The Knights of Columbus will purchase yoga mats and weights .

Sarah Carr , Sunman Elementary , will create art centers for students with special needs . These centers integrate art with subjects like math and science while fostering independent problem-solving . Los Primos of Bright sponsor Ms . Carr ’ s project .

Connie Turner and Shelly Koth will help third graders at Bright Elementary to use everyday objects such as cotton balls and cups to explore scientific concepts .

Barb Katenkamp , an administrator at North Dearborn Elementary , envisions a Viking Reading Challenge in which students will read to earn “ bases ” and move around their classroom baseball diamond . Once the students score a “ home run ,” the students will write a book review to share over the announcements . They will earn a run for their class and a free book to increase independent reading and improve the standardized test scores . The reading project is sponsored by United Community Bank .

Julie McAdams , North Dearborn Elementary , has a program for fourth-grade students to create art pieces which will be enriched with lighted elements using copper wire , clips , batteries and LED lights . Examples include a room with lamps , lightning bugs , a car with working headlights , or a cityscape with lighted windows . Created pieces will be on display at North Dearborn ’ s annual art show .

Terri Schmeltzer , an administrator at St . John ’ s Evangelical Lutheran School in Aurora , has been sponsored to purchase computers for student use . The school is required by the state of Indiana to conduct ISTEP testing . Previously the school had chosen to administer the Terra Nova battery of Achievement Testing which measures the students ’ progress against students from across the U . S . as opposed to just the state of Indiana . All testing must be conducted online in the 2018- 19 school year .
