Students Attend Manufacturing Camp

The third annual Manufacturing Camp for middle school students in Ripley County was a great success . The camp was designed by six leading companies in the area and was facilitated by Genesis : Pathways to Success and the Batesville School Corporation .
Forty-two campers got to see the vast variety of career opportunities that exist locally in the manufacturing sector . They visited six manufacturing facilities and experienced hands-on activities . Each business hosted lunch for the campers and was a part of an afternoon of interactive learning about manufacturing . Students came away

Hopefully , everyone had a very enjoyable past month filled with lots of summer activities and a relaxing Labor Day weekend . Leaves will start changing before long , and we can enjoy some sweatshirt weather . I know I can ’ t wait for the summer heat to be over !
St . Nicholas School kicked off the school year on Aug . 8 , welcoming one hundred forty-six students , the highest enrollment in years . The theme for this school year will be , “ The builder of everything is God !” This theme is appropriate , especially this year , with construction set to begin on the new school building in a few weeks . Pictured is Mrs . Mary Jo Reer ’ s third-grade class on the first day of school .
Congratulations to Janet Jenner , Sunman ’ s newest town clerk !
Last month ’ s question was , “ What type of store was located in the Lewis Sieg building in 1913 ?” The answer is a clothing store that was started by Samuel Kirschner . There was a clothing / dress store ran out of this building until 1987 .
This month ’ s question is , “ Who led the Sunman Tigers to a Ripley County Championship in 1963 and was inducted into the Ripley County Basketball Hall of Fame this year ?” Send me an email with your answer !
I would like you to let me know about family milestones , vacation , or a little bit about Sunman and yourself . Share the good news with me at sunman @ GOBEACONnews . com .
with knowledge of the skills needed and the high school classes available to help them obtain those skills .

Recently a few Little Libraries have sprung up here in Milan . It is a take-abook , return-a-book system that is free to the public . No doubt other communities have noticed the same thing in their hometowns . These libraries are small wooden boxes with books that anyone can borrow . There is a joy in knowing that people are sharing their favorite books with their community . I do want to point out that we have a lovely public library in Milan , and one may wonder why we need the Little Libraries . In my thinking , people can never have enough access to good books , and the Little Library is a fun , carefree way to share books that all can enjoy . The Little Libraries don ’ t replace the resources of a library . Rather they supplement them in the community .
Little Free Lending Library is a registered nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading and builds community by promoting neighborhood book exchanges . A brief history and a few highlights of the program- In 2009 Todd H . Bol designed and built the first Little Free Library at his home in Hudson , Wisconsin to honor his late mother , who loved books . Mr . Bol envisioned the placement of Little Free Libraries in communities all over the neighborhood . A year later he gave away thirty Little Free Libraries to friends and family for installation in their towns . In May 2012 Little Free Library was officially established as a Wisconsin nonprofit corporation , and in August , the 2510th Little Free

Common Financial Mistakes
A Five-Part Series on Common Financial Mistakes Made by Pre-Retirees & Retirees
PART THREE : TAXES
It ’ s not how much you make , but how much you save . 1 This popular phrase couldn ’ t be truer when it comes to taxes . One of my favorite quotes about taxes comes from Federal Judge Learned Hand who said :
“ Repeatedly , courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging one ’ s affairs as to keeping taxes as low as possible . Everybody does so , rich or poor , and all do right , for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands : taxes are enforced exactions , not voluntary contributions . To demand more in the name of morals is mere cant .” 2
It is the philosophy of keeping as much of what you make as possible and arranging your affairs in such a way to pay the least amount of tax that leads us to our 3rd common financial mistake .
Common Mistake # 3 : Tax Preparing not Tax Planning
Every year , as a law-abiding citizen , you either prepare your own taxes or arrange for someone to prepare your taxes . The numbers are calculated , and , in the end , you know that you either owe additional taxes or you will receive a refund . For most , once this process is complete , no further steps are taken until it is time the next year to do it all over again . Unfortunately , the opportunity to discover what you could have done differently to pay less in taxes , is lost because there was not tax planning , only tax preparing .
I find it amazing how many people are shocked when I ask to see their tax return the first time we meet . I often hear , “ Roger , why do you need to see my tax return ? My other advisor
“ I ’ m astounded that other advisors are not asking to see a client ’ s tax return . Taxes are a big part of a client ’ s complete financial picture .”
— Roger Ford
never asked to see my tax return .” I ’ m astounded that other advisors are not asking to see a client ’ s tax return . Taxes are a big part of a client ’ s complete financial picture . As a financial advisor and a fiduciary , it is my responsibility to look at the complete picture . Often , we can see the opportunity to save money on taxes . I haven ’ t had a client turn down this finding , because the client likes to keep more of their money .
Here ’ s a simple illustration to highlight the importance of tax planning . Let ’ s take the example of a married couple . They draw half of their retirement income from social security and the other half from their IRAs . The husband predeceases the wife , and to continue with her same lifestyle , she will need to make up the lost social security income due to his passing . To create more income , she begins to pull additional money from their IRA . In doing this , her tax liability increases . Not only that , but she will now file her taxes as a single filer , and her standard deduction will be cut in half . It is highly likely that she will end up owing more taxes on the same amount of money . This situation can be prevented with appropriate tax planning . This is just one small example , there are countless reasons why tax planning is an essential piece of retirement planning .
In closing , during this next tax year , I encourage you to do more than just have your taxes prepared each year . Take the time to sit down with a qualified professional and see what opportunities that might be available to you , allowing you to keep more of your hard-earned money .
