Brandon Hoffman, son of
Zach and Stephanie Hoff-
man, competed in the state
Future Farmers of America
(FFA) demonstration this past
summer at Purdue University.
Twelve districts were repre-
sented in the competition, and
Brandon was the representa-
tive for our area.
For his demonstration, Bran-
don showed blacksmith tech-
niques used by blacksmiths
today as well as blacksmiths
in the past. He made half of
an “S” hook. He placed third
in the competition and is a del-
egate at the national level in
case the first- or second-place
winners are unable to attend.
O
A blacksmith is a skilled
craftsman who fabricates
objects out of iron by the hot
and cold forging of an anvil.
Being a blacksmith was a
common profession in the
1800s and early 1900s, with
most towns having at least
one blacksmith who made
wrought-iron objects used in
machinery and farming. With
today’s modern equipment,
blacksmiths have become a
profession of the past.
Brandon became inter-
ested in blacksmithing while
watching his paternal great-
grandfather who was a skilled
woodworker and blacksmith.
Originally, Brandon desired to
make guns and muzzleload-
ers like his great-grandfather,
but after learning the trade, he
realized his passion is making
ornamental objects such as
fences and gates. Congratula-
tions on your award, Brandon!
Jake Widolff recently
joined the Batesville High
School staff as a Spanish
teacher. Jake is teaching
second, third and fourth level
Spanish classes.
It’s a fitting posi-
tion for Jake who
spent five years
living in Madrid,
Spain. Good luck
in your new posi-
tion, Jake!

Boo! It is almost that time
of year when our favorite little
goblins, princesses and super
heroes make their way from
door to door only to end their
journey in a complete sugar
rush.
Harrison City Council is
trying something new to
spark an interest in possible
future leaders. The Junior City
Council Pilot Program hopes
to enhance leadership skills
by allowing students to see
how our local government
operates first hand. Harrison
City Council member, Cindy
Abrams, came up with the
idea after a student approached
her requesting to be an assis-
tant for the summer. So far, the
group of eager students have

I love to see a garden that
is over-the-top clean and full
of fresh goodies. I love my
local honey and do my part
to have a yard full of clover
and flowers to feed our bees.
Yes, I love a good steak, fresh
apples, and toasted tomato
sandwiches with mayo. I
have a longtime friend who
is that over-the-top guy when
it comes to all of these things
and more. Mike Bentz has
been my dentist since we
moved to Brookville. I knew
he had a great garden and
was a beekeeper, but I didn’t
know how it all started. So
I called him up and got the
scoop. Mike’s grandfather
