Lewis is an astrobiology research scientist at the University of Westminster. He explores how microbial life, and signs of its past existence, might survive the bombardment of cosmic radiation on the surface of Mars, and what are the best ways to try and detect it.
After graduating from the University of Oxford in 2002 with a first class degree in Biological Sciences, Lewis moved to University College London for a four year combined MRes-PhD programme at CoMPLEX. He was awarded his doctorate in 2007: the thesis has since been reprinted by academic publishers under the alluring title of Martian Death Rays.
Lewis has also held an STFC Science in Society Fellowship, and often delivers public lectures and live events at schools, and literary and science festivals. He has been invited to speak at prestigious locations including the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Institution and the Natural History Museum.
