Now, what does this have to do with the Atlanta Bar Association? Fair question. Some of you may have seen the law. com article in the Daily Report recently,“ Law Profs Turn to Hamilton( Yes, the Musical) as Teaching Tool.” It caught my eye.
In particular, Professor Will Baude of the University of Chicago Law School uses‘ Hamilton’ in the classroom as a teaching tool. One lesson, according to the article, is that the life of Alexander Hamilton shows“ the value of challenging conventional wisdom.” Think the National Bank. Another is“ the importance of friendships and personal connections in one’ s career.” Think George Washington and Marquis de Lafayette.
All of us know there’ s a tendency with practicing law to get into a rut, sticking to just what we know. And it can be all too easy to limit our friendships and personal connections. Things can grow stale. Other problems can develop, starting with a simple loss of interest in our profession.
The Atlanta Bar is a vital place. Invest some time in the Atlanta Bar – find a way to get involved – and you’ ll see the benefit. I can’ t promise that you’ ll one day be on the $ 10 bill, but you’ ll be rewarded in ways you couldn’ t have predicted.
Speaking of‘ Hamilton,’ the Atlanta Bar has its own musical – A Courthouse Line XII,‘ Mock the Vote.’ It will be playing at SCADShow in Midtown on November 10-12. I can guarantee( from the rehearsals so far) lots of laughs, a very good time, a chance to marvel at the talents of 70 + lawyers and judges in our community, and yet another reason to be proud of your bar association.
Get your tickets now. All proceeds go to benefit the Atlanta Bar Foundation. Also, why not invite a colleague and use this as a 2-for-2 event? I’ ll see you there!
That’ s where the Atlanta Bar Association offers so much. Our Sections have wonderful programming and rewarding opportunities to make connections. At the September meeting of the Board of Directors, our Section chairs gave reports about their activities. These reports were wonderful, inspiring.
