PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
'Hamilton'
and the

Full disclosure: I saw Broadway’s
blockbuster musical ‘Hamilton’ in the
summer of 2015. This was just after the
show had arrived on Broadway from
The Public Theatre, its off-Broadway
home. Thankfully, the tickets were not
yet through the roof.

Hamilton’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and I share
something in common. Hint: it’s not rap (he can, I
can’t); nor dance (he can, I can’t); nor singing (same
thing), just in case you’re wondering. Instead, we both
read Ron Chernow’s biography Alexander Hamilton
and were blown away. Having read the book, I had
to see the musical–the musical that Miranda had to
write having read the book.
Whether you learn about Hamilton through a book
or the musical or both, it doesn’t take long to see that
our nation’s first Treasury secretary was a genius. With
debt threatening to undo the American Revolution,
Hamilton figured it all out.
