The Tax Law Section has kicked off the new fiscal year
with the addition of a new sponsor, Sterling Foundation Management LLC, which is in the business of
helping executives, entrepreneurs, and professionals
understand and take full advantage of the benefits offered by private foundations. We are in the process of
planning a CLE program entitled “Secondary Planning
for Charitable Remainder Trusts” which will feature
Evan Unzelman, President of Sterling Foundation
Management LLC.
Save the Date
Joint Summer Reception
We have two events planned for December this year.
On December 5, 2015, our semi-annual Tax Bar Liaison
Meeting with the Georgia Department of Revenue will
be held at their offices. Later that week on December
9, we have scheduled along with the Litigation and
the Labor and Employment Sections a joint breakfast
CLE entitled “Settlement Agreements in Employment
Cases – Avoiding the Landmines” at which I will cover
recent developments in the taxation of settlement
payments. We are also in the process of planning
joint CLE programs
with the Intellectual
Property and Real
Estate Sections. Stay
tuned.
In annual fashion, the Tax Law Section hosted its
popular Joint Summer Reception with the Georgia
Society of CPAs on August 18, 2016 at the Park Tavern
in Piedmont Park. The evening mixer hosted attorneys
and accountants from the Atlanta area for drinks and
hor d’oeurves. Despite a second year of rain storms,
approximately 60 practitioners attended the event,
allowing attendees to meet new members and catch
up with old friends.
The Tax Law Section’s next event for the year, a 3.5
hour CLE seminar on “Estate Planning for Non-Taxable
and Barely Taxable Estates,” will be held on November
7, 2016. The CLE seminar will be co-sponsored with
Diversified Trust Company and the Estate Planning
& Probate Section. The speaker will be Turney Berry
who is a partner with Wyatt Tarrant & Combs, LLP
where he leads the Firm’s Trusts, Estates & Personal
Planning Service Team.
