SECTION UPDATE LITIGATION By Christina M. Baugh Fellows LaBriola LLP [email protected] The Litigation Section bar year has gotten off to a great start. Our first breakfast, held on Friday, September 9, 2016 featured litigation power-house, family team Jim Butler and Jeb Butler focusing on closing arguments. We also learned that the oft-used phrase a family that tries cases together, stays together is true. What? Never heard that one? Well, according to this father-son team, it is true. Our second breakfast, “Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Who Now Hears Your Appeal?”, held on October 14, 2016, was a timely and informative panel discussion on the Judicial Jurisdictional Reform Act. The panel featured Justice Blackwell, Chief Judge Doyle, Darren Summerville, and was moderated by Michael Terry. The Section will continue to hold its monthly breakfasts throughout the year on the second Friday of the month, at 7:30 a.m. at the Ansley Golf Club. Keep an eye out for announcements regarding our upcoming breakfast titles. In November, we will hear from Professor Milich regarding the 2015 changes to the Georgia Evidence Code (now that time has passed allowing appellate review and input regarding the changes). In December, we will hear from Julian Fortuna and Amanda Farahany regarding navigating challenging situations in settling employment cases. Save the Date On October 27, 2016, the Litigation Section will cohost a happy hour at Eventide Brewery, 1015 Grant Street, NE, Atlanta GA 30315, from 5:30-8:30pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. We will be enjoying and sampling Eventide’s unique beer offerings on its tasting tour while mixing and mingling with members of the ACYL Section and the Public Interest Section. 40 October 2016 In honor of October’s Celebration of Service, it serves noting that the Litigation Section has continued to be active in the community this bar year. In September, the Section sponsored and participated in the Atlanta Bar’s Legal Run Around 5k race. Our Section has agreed to team up with the Bankruptcy Section to promote its Adversary Proceeding pro bono project. The Section is also happy to continue to support AVLF through its upcoming Winetasting on November 3, 2016. Hopefully you had a chance to read the informative articles in our Section’s newsletter, The Litigator, which was sent by email on September 28, 2016. Anyone wishing to submit an article for our next issue should contact John Hadden at [email protected]. As always, the Litigation Section loves its judges and is happy to invite all judges and judicial law clerks to attend our Section events for free. We would like to give a special thanks to our Section sponsors from the 2015-2016 Board year. Without them, we would not be able to put on the wonderful programing we do or make the same impact in our community. Thank You to Our Sponsors Applied Technical Services Counsel on Call Duplicating Products, Inc.
