The Battery was filled with energy as Atlanta Bar members and guests collected for the inaugural Spirits of the Law Whiskey Tasting at ASW Distillery on October 21 , 2021 . Co-chair Ryan K . Walsh ( Jones Day ) reflected , “ What a fantastic night ! It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces , as well as a lot of new ones , live and in-person ! And all to benefit such a great cause .”

“ I ’ m grateful for , and astonished by , the enthusiastic support we received for our event . Our goals were to raise funds for the Atlanta Bar Foundation and increase awareness of how the Foundation positively impacts youth and the community . I think we achieved those goals and am looking forward to more chances to spread the word about the great causes the Foundation funds which includes the Atlanta Bar ’ s Minority & Diversity Clerkship Program and Summer Law Internship Program along with our Grants Program that supports nonprofit pro bono legal service providers throughout Atlanta ,” shared co-chair Alan G . Poole ( Troutman Pepper ).

Every year the Atlanta Bar Litigation Section hosts the Bench and Bar Reception where the Logan E . Bleckley Award for Judicial Excellence is presented . This award is presented to a judge in recognition of their years of devoted public service . The award is named for Hon . Logan E . Bleckley , Associate Justice from 1875 to 1879 and Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court from 1887-1894 .
It felt great to be back in person this year , after the 2020 Bench and Bar was conducted virtually due to the COVID-19 restrictions . There was an excellent turnout for this year ’ s reception even with the limited seating capacity and social distancing guidelines . The guests delighted in fabulous weather and food as they mingled and enjoyed being back in person .
This year the recipient of the Logan E . Bleckley award was the Honorable Harold D . Melton ( former Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court ). It goes without saying that Chief Justice Melton along with the esteemed associate justices , led Georgia ’ s legal system through an unprecedented pandemic with unwavering direction and grace , allowing our legal system to resume normal functions as soon as possible . The award was introduced by his new colleague , Managing Partner Charles “ Chuck ” Palmer ( Troutman Pepper ).
