SECTION UPDATE
BANKRUPTCY
2017 Pro Bono Award Thanksgiving Volunteer Event
The Bankruptcy Section is thrilled to announce that the
Section was awarded the Atlanta Bar Association’s Pro Bono
Award for 2017. The award was presented to the Section at
the Atlanta Bar Association’s annual Celebrating Service
Luncheon, held on October 20, 2017. This award recognizes
the significant contributions made by the members of our
Section to the provision of pro bono legal services from
June 2016 through May of 2017. It is a well-deserved honor. On November 17th, approximately a dozen members of the
bankruptcy section volunteered at the Children’s Restora-
tion Network to assist with preparing Thanksgiving meal
baskets for at-risk families. The event was coordinated by
board member Howie Slomka.
2017 CARE Chapter of the Year
The Bankruptcy Section is also pleased to announce that
the Atlanta Chapter of CARE, which is coordinated by the
Bankruptcy Section Board members Melissa Davey and CC
Schnapp, has been named the CARE Chapter of the Year for
2017. CARE (which stands for Credit Abuse Resistance Educa-
tion) is a program that provides financial literacy education
to high school students. Many members of the Bankruptcy
Section, including both attorneys and judges, volunteer to
teach these financial literacy classes to Atlanta-area high
school students. The award will be presented during the
American Bankruptcy Institute’s Annual Winter Leadership
Conference, set to be held November 30-December 1, 2017,
in Palm Springs, California.
Fall Social
The Bankruptcy Section held its Annual Fall Social on Tues-
day, October 24, 2017, at JCT Kitchen. Retiring Judge Ray
Mullins, Judge of the Bankruptcy Court for the Northern
District of Georgia, was honored at the event. The Fall Social
was very well attended, with dozens of members joining to
recognize Judge Mullins and his important contributions to
bankruptcy practice and the Atlanta bankruptcy community.
