1952 A pictorial roster was published , a study was done of the traffic court which resulted in a new modem court , separating the traffic court from police court . Warren E . Burger , Assistant Attorney General of the United States , was the speaker at the Annual Meeting .
1955 A permanent office was established in the Fulton County Courthouse and a full time Executive Secretary was employed . The Lawyer Referral Service was transferred from Atlanta Legal Aid . The Atlanta Lawyer was established . Monthly Continuing Education luncheons for the membership and receptions for newly admitted members of the Bar were begun .
1956 Membership was over 1,000 . At a legislative retreat in the mid- 1950s , rural representatives challenged Atlantan Hamilton Lokey to walk across the hotel courtyard balancing a bottle on his head . They promised that if he made it without spilling any beer , they would support Lokey ' s bill to add two superior court judgeships in Fulton County . He succeeded . When the House next met , Lokey circulated this picture to remind colleagues of their promise , and later , Fulton County got the judgeships .
1958 The Executive Committee assisted in securing Paul Cadenhead as Special Prosecutor to assist the Solicitor General of Fulton Superior Court in presecuting State Government corruption . The investigation resulted in 22 indictments of state officials during Marvin Griffin ' s govemship . Cadenhead later served as President of the Atlanta Bar Association in 1970-1971 .
1960 The Special Law Economics Committee completed a law economics survey and distributed a printed pamphlet to every lawyer in the Atlanta area . The Court Congestion Committee recommended Friday calendar calls for jury cases in Superior Court and a jury-waived calendar . The History of the Association was completed . Secretary of State Dean Rusk was the speaker at the banquet and E . Smythe Gambrell , who introduced the speaker , was presented an Award of Distinguished Service from the Executive Committee .
1961 The Bar purchased mimeograph equipment to publish The Atlanta Lawyer in-house . There were 1,053 members .
1964 Membership was no longer restricted to only white lawyers .
1965 Membership was 1,159 , the budget was $ 25,020 , and there were only two Sections - Real Estate and Family Law . There were only two staff members - Margaret Lindsey , the Executive Director , and Diane O ' Steen .
1966 The Bar hosted an outing at Stone Mountain marina .
1967 Two additional Sections were added - Corporate Counsel and Labor & Employment Law . Membership was up to 1,194 .
1968 Percy Foreman , a prominate criminal defense attorney , spoke at a luncheon in November 1968 on the rights of the individual . So many members attended that the doors had to be shut and members were actually beating on the door to get in just to hear the speech .
1969 The Annual Meeting had the largest number of attendees at that time - over 1,000 . The speaker was Senator Edward M . Kennedy . Louis Nizer and John H . Disher , Deputy Director of Apollo Applications Program in NASA ' s office of Manned Space Flight were speakers at luncheons during that year .
1971 The third Bar staff member was added and the budget was $ 38,890 . Membership was at 1,654 .
1972 The Criminal Law Section was formed .
1974 The Sports League began .
1975 A part-time staff member was added , and the Atlanta Council of Younger Lawyers Section was organized . The Bar ' s logo was changed , and membership was at 2,249 with a budget of $ 94,315 . The Executive Director of 20 years , Margaret Lindsey , retired and Margo Holland was employed as Executive Director . Watergate ' s Archibald Cox addressed the Bar in December .
1976 The Bankruptcy and International Transactions Sections were formed . The Sports League award , The Herbert Johnson Athletic Trophy , was dedicated to Mr . Johnson who was described at the dedication as " incorrigible , incongruous , incurable , indestructible , intransigent , irrepressible , irradiant and irreplaceable ." Nita Wilson joined as the fourth staff member .
1977 The Annual Meeting honored Atlanta lawyers serving in prominent positions in the Carter administration : Griffin Bell , U . S . Attorney General , Michael J . Egan , Jr ., Associate Attorney General , DeJongh Franklin , Special Assistant to the President , Stuart E .
