Reflections on 135 Years

I am honored to have been inducted as the 116th President of the Atlanta Bar Association in the year that the Association turns 135 years old . As we celebrate this important milestone , it is only fitting that we first take a look back at the Association ’ s legacy as we envision its future .

The Association was founded in 1888 when a group of Atlanta lawyers assembled in the Fulton County courthouse and adopted the Constitution of the Atlanta Bar Association . As I think of this group , whom I imagine on many fronts couldn ’ t be more different from everyone here , on a few important points I am sure they are just the same . That is a passion for the law , a commitment to serving their community , and the dedication to carrying out the mission of the Association , which is :
AMY B . CHENG Nelson Mullins amy . cheng @ nelsonmullins . com to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States and of Georgia and maintain representative government ; to advance jurisprudence ; to promote justice ; to uphold the honor of the profession of law ; to apply its knowledge and experience in the field of the law to the promotion of the public good ; to encourage cordial intercourse among the members of the Atlanta Bar ; and to promote such activities of the bar , in the interest of the legal profession and of the public .
As we kickoff this 135th year , the Association ’ s future continues to shine brightly as we build on our great community and legacy . A legacy that instead of telling new members to sit down and wait , encourages them to learn , lean in , and ultimately lead . I am a demonstrated example of that effort .
