A
s the new Chair of the Estate Planning and Probate
Section I look forward to the upcoming year. For the
second consecutive year, the Section was honored as
the Small Section of the Year. As the new Chair, that places
some pressure on me to get the “three-peat.” The exceptional
service of immediate past Chairs, Loraine DiSalvo (201213) and Robert Turner (2013-14) is a tough act to follow.
Fortunately, I have the resources of a dedicated Board to
continue and expand the programs of the Section.
The Section could not function without its sponsors: Adams
Capital; American Surety Bonds; Brightworth; Moore,
Stephens, Tiller, LLC; Nease, Lagana, Eden and Culley, Inc.;
and Regions Bank.
We will continue to be a strong voice in the community by
volunteer efforts in the Fulton County Probate Information
Center and the DeKalb County Probate Information Center.
The Atlanta Bar President, Jackie Saylor is a member of our
Board, and has involved the Section in a clothing drive for
students at Therrell High School. As well, the Section will
maintain its relationship with the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers
Foundation (AVLF), making contributions in honor of our
monthly speakers and participating with AVLF events.
The Section will host 11 breakfast meetings on the second
Wednesday of each month (except July) at The Buckhead
Club. Plans are in place for speakers covering a variety of
topics applicable to the practice of law in the field of estate
planning and probate, continuing to deal with both tax and
non-tax matters. CLE is available. The Section has also
reinstituted its “season ticket” program for breakfasts so a
member can attend all 11 breakfast meetings for the cost of
nine.
Signs & Evidence of Criminal Abuse; and Georgia’s New
Elder Abuse Statute. In August, the breakfast will feature
a presentation by Nikola (Nick) R. Djuric regarding recent
matters and tools for charitable planning.
Our monthly breakfast will not take place in July; instead
the Section hopes that many of its members will attend the
Fiduciary Law Institute at St. Simons, Georgia. The Section
will host the opening cocktail hour event on Wednesday,
July 9 from 5:00-7:00 pm at the King & Prince Hotel, and all
attendees of the Institute are invited.
Atlanta is fortunate to have among the academic community
several nationally recognized experts in the fields of estate
planning, transfer tax planning, and prob
