Legal education has changed — yet still persevered — during a much-altered time for all of us .
Asynchronous . Synchronous . Two-factor protection . Zoom meetings . A few of these words hung in the periphery of our working vocabularies before the pandemic , but many of them have become regular utterances in the past year . With the pandemic altering life as we ’ ve previously known it , the law school adjusted almost all aspects of its operations to meet the needs of a student , faculty , and staff population that remains mostly online .
Are classes different ? How ?
Based on feedback from the spring 2020 semester and a wealth of resources relating to online pedagogy , law school faculty members planned for a range of course delivery options . The law school offered a series of workshops for faculty on effective and interactive approaches to hybrid teaching and synchronous and asynchronous online teaching techniques . We also developed additional teaching support , including greater use of teaching / technology assistants and integration of new strategies to promote student learning . Our ongoing training and investment in supporting faculty are intended to reflect the excellent education students expect and deserve from Emory Law .
In addition to training faculty for online teaching and additional teaching support to promote student learning , we planned a number of extracurricular enhancements to maintain a strong sense of connection and community among our students . The faculty will also provide opportunities for informal interaction with students , such as virtual coffees , happy hours , and other opportunities .
Have you made any changes during this time that , even after COVID-19 , you might implement in the future ?
Both Emory Law and the university expanded support services for student wellbeing . This includes resources such as Counseling & Psychological Services ( CAPS ), Student Health Services , and Anytime Health Services , available to students in Georgia , out of state , or in another country . CAPS also provides a weekly drop-in consultation service specifically for law students called “ Let ’ s Talk ,” and we launched a partnership with AwareHealth – a mobile app focused on law student wellbeing . Refer to the law school ’ s wellness webpage for more information .
